I'm really confused and conflicted on this new take on the Batman . The characteristic that always set Batman apart from the other superheroes with powers was his reliance on wit and preparation to avoid harm and prevail in battle. This new Batman series has him run headlong into armies firing guns at him at point-blank range and he beats them despite being him numerous times by bullets, fists, and blades WHAT??? Since when did he become Superman. Also Bane breaks his back again and he just resets it with no after effects. COME ON MAN!I don't want to give away the plot twists so I will hold further comment on the storyline.Anyway, l like most of the art and the main story is interesting though at times too preachy. The interchange with the junior "suicide squad" is also interesting but again bogs down in the metaphysical mumbo-jumbo of the writer trying to make the situations feel like an episode of the Outer Limits. The last 2 issues of this collection was all about the Catwoman/Batman relationship. Good but it felt slightly out of place in thus collection.I gave this graphic novel 3 stars because I truly like the Batman character and the story is original and well crafted. I just wish they stop with the super-Batman charaterization.
Tom King delivered a fantastic volume here, adding totally new dimensions to the Batman Cat Woman relationship, and bringing a much darker aspect of the dark knight. The repeating of dialogue is an excellent motif, and it helps the emotional journey of the characters making it a deeply impactful and symmetrical read. The two characters that King focused most on were Batman and Catwoman, and their inner monologues were fantastic and added a great contrast between the two, as well as connecting them. Not only was it a fantastic emotional journey but Mikel Janin drew some great action that perfectly matched the morbid tone of the story. Batman was just as smart and in control of the situation as I wanted him to be, a great representation of the Dark Knight . The fighting weaved seamlessly across the page which gave a great flow to the story. Bane was also phenomenal, totally bad ass and also a tragic story of addiction his final confrontation with Batman was chalk full of the awesome twists you expect from a Batman book. On top of all of this the Batman Catwoman was handled wonderfully, it was a heart breaking love story that left you wanting more. Overall this sets the tone for Batman in rebirth and I hope that King and Mikel keep this up. Definitely read this one.
Batman Vol 2 I Am Suicide is the continuation of Tom King’s Batman Rebirth Run and follows the events out of Volume one with Batman looking to cure Gotham Girl’s madness and he needs help from Amanda Waller and the Suicide Squad to break into Santa Prisca prison. In a much better volume than the previous one. Focusing more on the complicated relationship between Batman and Catwoman. It makes an interesting dynamic and Batman getting his very own suicide squad was a nice touch. The comic features Batman being superhuman again with him defeating an armed army of soldiers with his bare fists. This was laughable, but at this point Batman has become an OP hero which kind of spoils his humanity appeal so less Batman beating up an army and more Batman using his wits and tech. Art is serviceable it changes depending on the given issue but it alright for the most part. The story is much better than volume one as it features characters that are interesting with a lot of nods to the lesser known Batman villains like the condiment king and kite man. It’s nice to see niche villains apart from the standard rouges gallery. Batman: I am suicide was an enjoyable read it picks up the story arc from the slog that was volume one and while some scenes were silly it didn’t ruin my enjoyment of the volume. A recommendation for Batman Aficionados looking for a good arc to sink their teeth into.
So the basic plot of this one is Batman assembles a Suicide Squad of his own to go to Santa Prisca prison in order to kidnap the Psycho Pirate (so he can repair the now-insane Gotham Girl's mind) from Bane who is using him as a living human anti-depressant. Bane, you see, is back on the Venom and depressed about the fact he fell off the wagon.I love Bane but Bane is always at his least threatening when he's on Venom. Bane without Venom is able to beat the hell out of Batman in a one-on-one fight. Bane on Venom has his Venom hose cut and immediately falls apart. It's a shame because he's a wonderfully nuanced character when not addicted to drugs and nothing more than a walking addiction metaphor otherwise. He's also apparently once more taken over his home island that consists of a prison and nothing else.I gotta say this is a ridiculous frigging book as I'm trying to figure out in what universe does Batman need the help of the Ventriloquist, Punch and Jewlee, the Bronze Tiger (okay he's not bad), and Catwoman to get into Bane's island. Okay, I'm mostly just objecting to Punchee and Jewelee who have become the discount Joker and Harley Quinn since that pairing is dead as well as done. It's more the Jared Leto and Margot Robbie version anyway where they're actually in love too.There's the bizarre plot where, apparently, Catwoman has killed 200 terrorists like she's Jack frigging Baur or Bryan Mills. She has a particular set of skills and apparently has gone from being a cat burglar to Public Enemy No. 1#. Okay, this is ridiculous but in what universe does anyone object to vigilantes killing terrorists? Maybe this would fly in Star Trek but they'd have been giving her a medal for it in our world let alone DC. The "twist" also doesn't make sense because, again, no one would be upset with her.It's...okay...but just a weird bunch of issues all round. There's a decent bit at the end where Batman and Catwoman discuss their relationship a bit (as well as the fact Bruce is willing to overlook the fact she's a criminal for one night--which he knows she'll take advantage of). Holly Robinson a.k.a Catwoman's sidekick is also brought back into continuity, which I admit I didn't know she'd ever been OUT OF, but not in a way I approve of.6/10
