I loved this book. It is a large book, but I couldn't put it down; had to finish it before beginning my book club reading. I have been recommending this book to all my family and friends. It is very educational, full of history, politics and personal life achievements as well as sorrow. Albright writes with passion and clarity. She was born in my cohort so I found this exceptionally stimulating and informative. She could have made a great president had she been allowed to run for the presidency. This book was inspirational and full of energy. Should be required reading for all ages. The machinations of policy and politics behind the scenes was so informative and exciting. Can't say enough about this book. Be sure to read beyond the end to see the photos and other information provided to document the writing of the book. WOW, I bought this on my Kindle App, but I want the hard copy now to have it on my book shelves for posterity.

This book was great reading,Madeleine, was a good secretary for the U.S.. I am going to share my book with a teacher that I used to work with. Reading this book gives a reader an in sight to the working of the U. S Secretary of State. Trump could not handle the presidency after reading about how a person has to handle the personalities of European diplomatically.

I needed to read about an influential leader for my Leadership and Management class for college. Although I was interested in learning more about Madeleine Albright, I wasn't exactly excited about the reading. What a surprise I was in for when I began reading this. It is not a boring read at all. I found that I was captivated by her writing style and the story she was telling. Learning about the path Madeleine took to become the first Woman United States Secretary of State was so inspiring. I highly recommend this book.

Although I enjoyed this memoir and certainly admire Madeline Albright, I found that her writing style was too factual, simply recounting the facts rather than giving much insight into her own emotions about the events and decisions. Perhaps she's just a very private person. I found I enjoyed the first part of the book more, particularly the part about her discovery that 3 of her 4 grandparents were actually Jewish, which was hidden from her as she was growing up. Much of the rest of the book seemed to consist of her bragging about or defending decisions she made as UN Ambassador and Secretary of State.I read this for a women's book group, and most of us agreed that we were looking for a bit more personality in the book.

Madeleine Albright's auto-biography is a good book for anyone interested in her years as Secretary of State, as well as providing a clear narration of her life that led up to that point. I found this a great read, giving me insights into her thinking and decision-making on many key points in her tenure as SecState, including her thoughts on the Balkans as well as U.S. (in)action in Rwanda. Highly recommend this book.

What a fascinating woman and what a journey she has been on throughout her life. Being an Australian, I was not drawn to purchase this book because of any political bias, I was just interested to learn more about her as a person and what lead her to become Secretary of State. The book is extremely well written and I found it hard to put it down. It never got bogged down in the political side but gave insight into political events and decisions that were very interesting. I would love to meet her in person - she is intelligent, resourceful, dogmatic in her determination to do everything in her power to ensure the well-being of America and its interests yet comes across as humble and I suspect she has a wicked sense of humor. I am full of admiration of what she has achieved in her life and I would recommend this book to anyone who would like to know more about the person behind the position.

I bought "Madam Secretary" almost five years ago, and only read it recently, during my holidays. I now regret not having done so before, but then, it is always best to do something late than never at all.Madeleine Albright, the first woman to become Secretary of State in the United States, shares with us the story of her life, and a look behind closed doors regarding events that we can already find in the pages of history books. In this book you will find the kind of details regarding her professional life that will allow you to understand things like the dynamics of high stakes negotiations, or the important role that humor plays when trying to avoid direct confrontation. In her collaboration with Bill Woodward, Albright manages to engage the reader, and even make him laugh. Can you help but smile when you read that "The mood was good - deceptively so. The summit would rapidly deteriorate into an exercise similar to the herding of cats"? Or fail to appreciate Albright's self-deprecating humor when she said to the Security Council that action on an issue had to be delayed until she received orders from Washington, because "The issue will not be decided until the fat lady sings"?On the whole, "Madam Secretary" is a book that I loved. In my opinion, it is a very good choice for people who like to read witty and well-written autobiographies, but a particularly special treat for those that are also interested or working in the field of International Relations. Highly recommended...Belén Alcat

Historians on Hamilton: How a Blockbuster Musical Is Restaging America's Past, by Claire Bond Potter Joseph M. Adelman

Review

“For Hamilton fans, history buffs, political thinkers and Broadway acolytes, this collection provides dozens of fascinating perspectives, correctives, and sidelong directives. It probably won’t change your mind about the show, but it will keep you thinking and talking about it, and the world that surrounds it, for a long time to come. If you love Hamilton the musical or have any curiosity about the man himself and where he fits into the American panorama, this is the book for you." (Jack Viertel producer, critic, renowned author, and senior vice president of Jujamcyn Theaters)"Hamilton, the musical, has turned thousands of people onto the history of the American founding. For those who want more, Historians on Hamilton digs deep into the myths and realities behind the show." (Jacob Weisberg editor-in-chief of the Slate Group and author of The Bush Tragedy)"Historians on Hamilton is an erudite and accessible scholarly consideration of the Broadway phenomenon that created an Alexander Hamilton palatable for our times. An indispensable work for all interested in the founding and contemporary racial politics." (Annette Gordon-Reed author of The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family)"Deeply documented, culturally astute, interpretively diverse, consistently illuminating—this is a model of intellectual engagement. Providing insight into Hamilton’s significance, the essays cogently reveal how contemporary culture shapes our past.” (Joshua Brown American Social History Project, City University of New York Graduate Center)"Treating Hamilton as a historical phenomenon in its own right, contributors to this volume reflect on the lives that inspired it and its meaning for our conflict-ridden present." (Kathleen M. Brown David Boies Professor of History, The University of Pennsylvania)"Think of this volume as a how-to manual for scholars to use the brilliance of Hamilton to teach about the incredibly complex  power dynamics of early America." (Gautham Rao assistant professor of history at American University and author of National Duties)"Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton is enthralling as musical theater. As history…not so much. Fortunately, two great professional historians, Renee C. Romano and Claire Bond Potter, are here to set the record straight, gathering expert essays to tell you the inconvenient truths about Alexander Hamilton that the hit play leaves out. More than that, though, Historians on Hamilton offers informed and insightful meditations on the themes of history, memory, legacy, interpretation and art that lie at the heart of the Broadway smash. No Hamilton fan should do without it." (David Greenberg professor of history at Rutgers University, author of Republic of Spin)"A thought-provoking and carefully crafted collection of scholarship that has much to offer readers interested in music, theater, or American history." (Library Journal starred review)"The Issue on the Table: Is 'Hamilton' Good For History?" by Kate Keller   (Smithsonian Magazine Online)"Cumulatively, the essays in Historians on Hamilton provide a useful and impressive range of perspectives from which to appreciate the historical significance of the Broadway sensation, to evaluate the historical accuracy of the story Hamilton tells, and to prod us to consider the contemporary stakes of the historical narratives we consume, celebrate, and propagate." An outstanding collection discussing thoughtfully and critically both the historical questions about Hamilton himself and the show, contemporary implications of how Hamilton the Musical presents the past, and contemporary context in which this show emerged and flourished. The essays are well written and highly recommended for anyone who has seen, plans to see, or has heard about Hamilton, The Musical, and for those who are interested in the Founding Fathers genre of history.

I am loving this book and am delighted to have found it before seeing the show for the first time, in DC, in a few weeks. I'm about a third of the way through and have found the essays fascinating. The first two essays alone gave me a very helpful overview of the highlights of Hamilton's life and legacy that will be touched on in the play. After reading just those two, the next time I listened to the sound track (which I'm able to stream free on Amazon as a prime member), I had context for the lyrics, which very much enriched the listening. I have also been both intrigued and enlightened by other essays on the topics of slavery, gender roles and rights, and the economics of Hamilton's era, and ways in which the play was faithful to or departed from history as is understood by these specialist historians. Now and then there's a bit of overlap in the essays, which is to be expected when different academics cover similar turf. I don't mind it at all, because it helps reinforce the concepts, all of which spark my curiosity. I knew I wouldn't have the time or attention span (sadly) to read the Chernow Hamilton tome on which the play is based. This collection does the job of priming me for the show, and then some, because it's not just one person's take but that of many experts taking many angles. Brilliant concept, well executed. Highly recommended. (PS - I purchased the Kindle format for myself and the paperback as a gift - both of which are great - not the hardback as this review somehow indicated by mistake.)

America has gone Hamilton crazy. Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tony-winningCover of Historians on Hamilton Anthology musical has spawned sold-out performances, a triple platinum cast album, and a score so catchy that it is being used to teach U.S. history in classrooms across the country. But just how historically accurate is Hamilton? And how is the show itself making history? Historians on Hamilton brings together a collection of top scholars to explain the Hamilton phenomenon and explore what it might mean for our understanding of America’s history. The contributors examine what the musical got right, what it got wrong, and why it matters. Does Hamilton’s hip-hop take on the Founding Fathers misrepresent our nation’s past, or does it offer a bold positive vision for our nation’s future? Can a musical so unabashedly contemporary and deliberately anachronistic still communicate historical truths about American culture and politics? And is Hamilton as revolutionary as its creators and many commentators claim?(via Goodreads)I received an eARC of Historians on Hamilton from Edelweiss, courtesy of Rutgers University Press, in exchange for an honest review.I love history, and I love Hamilton, so when I saw Historians on Hamilton up for request on Edelweiss, I knew I had to at least try to get it. You should check out my list of other books to read if you love Hamilton, or my review of Chernow’s biography. As with all anthologies, Historians on Hamilton had several essays that I enjoyed, several essays that blew my mind and kept my wheels turning, and several that didn’t really work for me. Hamilton is, of course, not perfect, and that’s fine. I was interested to see what I could learn from these historians. For me, the first half of Historians on Hamilton was narratively stronger than the latter. This was where I found all of the essays that blew my mind. I honestly felt that the last three essays drug on a little bit, and were not as well done. One essay that didn’t resonate with me in Historians on Hamilton was “Reckoning with America’s Racial Past, Present and Future in Hamilton.” Even this essay had a lot of great points, and a lot for me to keep thinking on. One thing that author Patricia Herrera misses during her critical essay about the cultural erasure that comes with Hamilton is how smart today’s youth are. Today’s middle and high schoolers are working their asses off to change the world they see into a better one. They’re also usually a better judge of things that are harmful than the generation ahead of them. That being said, they will need some guidance. When your 10-year-old wants to dress up as Angelica Schuyler, and that isn’t okay, talk to her about it. Talk to her about the differences between the character and the historical figure. Together, you can find other historical figures that had she admires in the character. She’ll learn and also tell all her friends about what her cool mom taught her.RATING:Overall, I enjoyed Historians on Hamilton. I think it’s a strong historical anthology that takes the present day into effect. I think it will be a hit with a lot of people.

Alexander Hamilton Answers the Historiansby Nancy SpannausAug. 2, 2018—While I did not have very high hopes for this book of essays critiquing the Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical Hamilton, I did not expect to find such a concerted set of attacks on not only Alexander Hamilton himself, but also historian Ron Chernow and the whole school of historians who positively assess the role of the “dead white European males” who led the world-historical battle to establish the American Republic. It was an eye-opener, to say the least, and rather disheartening when one considers that many of these historians are shaping the minds of the nation’s youth in our universities.

A great resource for teaching American history at any level, and a great read for anyone who wants to understand the historical contexts and controversies related to the musical.

I am by no means a Hamilton hater. I'm rather the opposite. Hamilton was introduced to me in 2017, and I couldn't have loved it more. I sang the soundtrack for months on end. I still continue my search for the perfect book about him, his amazing wife Eliza, his children and his relationship with the Schuyler sisters. However this book was a MESS! I couldn't even BEGIN to decipher the garbage inside. I didn't even finish the sample. It was that bad.I am by no means trying to slander this book's name like Adams and Reynolds did to Alexander.Overall there was some good info but this just wasn't my cup of tea. Disappointing to this 14-year-old Hamiltonion who adores this man and sings like Philipa Soo.

We were in Singapore for 10 days and we made good use of this little book. It is easy to carry around, has a decent map, and has good details for each place you would like to visit. In general, we find the Top 10 books to be very helpful. It's great to have a Lonely Planet book with all of it's detail, but if you are traveling to many places as we are, it's nice to have smaller books like this series of Top 10.

The PLUS: 5 Stars! The guide takes a pyramidal approach to the sights of your destination. So you slowly can work yourself through the areas that really interest you by easily skipping things you would not want to see or visit at all.It also makes it easy to find the things that are important to you because the descriptions are small enough and pictures further make it easy to attract your interest or pass things by.The MINUS: 4 Stars! The good about the Maps is that they are there at all and also that there is an index of some streets. The contained foldout maps though helpful when there is nothing else at all are not my favorite because they are quite small and are more an overview to identify the area where something is to be found on a better more detailed map. The same maps as the foldouts are also on a separate map that is detachable. This is a good idea but they are way to small and hard to read especially in dim light and in an awkward format to be really useful. - When available, I rather get a local map from the tourist office and transfer my destinations to it.SUMMARY: 5 Stars! This guide is an extremely useful sightseeing guide and small enough to be carried with you all the time for quick reference. It also allows you to choose the amount of detail you want to follow for the town: top 10 Highlights - top 10 to each highlight - top ten to some general categories like museums, bars, hotels, restaurants, shopping, and also some specific categories just for this destination like stunning places to worship or top 10 hawker centers and food courts.Insider tips or as they call the sections: "Street smart" round up this little guide. The maps are OK but could be improved. The deficiency of the maps though should not detract from the overall usefulness of this guide for your destination. This is true for a first time visitor with limited or all kinds of time and also for the return visitor, who wants to to repeat some destinations in more detail or avoid the same old top ten but venture out into new territory.

We have frequently used the DK Eyewitness Guides - Top 10 books when we are going to be in a city for just 2 or 3 days. I already had the paper version of this book, but thought that perhaps if I downloaded the Kindle version, I could save the weight of the actual book while traveling. This could be a huge weight savings since we would have four DK books in total!I was disappointed in the Kindle version because the photo images are extremely low resolution, whether in original form or zoomed. Also, the master and mass transit maps are missing, though the smaller maps are present. I am glad I only ordered one of the four books in Kindle. Unfortunately, the Kindle versions cannot replace the hard copies unless I take along just the book covers and jackets, leaving the text pages at home. The master maps are on the inside of the front covers.

The title of this valuable 128 guide is misleading--it doesn't cover only the top 10 sights in Singapore but rather is a comprehensive guide to the place, covering, for example, places to see along the Singapore River, museums, Sentosa, the Singapore Flyer (along with a guide to what you can see from it), the Botanic Gargens, places of worship to see, and neighborhoods including Chinatown and Little India. It also provides information on such things as passports, taxis, and the best sort of place to exchange money. Before I went, I read through this book with appreciation. Each place identified in this guide is located on fold-out maps included in this book inside the front and back covers, a quite valuable feature in itself for locating places. I found its bits of advice sometimes very helpful, such as when it alerted me to the EZ Links cards you can use on the MRT (subway)(which you can buy at a MRT station), its mention of the Burgis Street "night market," and its remark that "bumboats are the best way to see the Singapore River." Generally though I find it best to use the website tripadvisor as a guide to select hotels rather than this guidebook, or the other guidebooks to Singapore I had purchased, but this is more a limitation belonging to guidebooks in general rather than of this particular guidebook.

I'm planning a trip to Singapore in the near future, and I always buy the DK Top Ten books as the starting point before I buy a more informative book. So when it comes to learning something new about a city and wanting to see what the major attractions are, DK helps you plan them out and give you enough information to start to mentally plan out the trip.I would never use the DK Top Ten books as the sole means to plan a trip, since they're meant for quick reference and a high level overview. Still, time after time, these books always reside in my cargo pants pockets on trips and are borrowed by others because it's quick and to the point. For the price, you can't beat it, but you'll want to shop for another book after you get this.

This book is out of date; it has an updated cover but the content is old. DK books are usually excellent; this one is not quite right. Buy something more current.

I bought this guide prior to a business trip to Singapore. I've been there for four days and as I was working, I had only the evenings to see some of the city. The guide has been pretty good to take me through the basics, and I think it was worth the money spent. Most of the attractions are closed during the evening, and the guide helped me find what to see in this nice city. The thing that I disagree is that this series have a top ten to everything, but the world is not flat, so they are always filling the lower positions with uninteresting things. Still, the descriptions will certainly help you decide what to see on a short schedule.
