About the Author
David Jepsen is a former journalist and corporate marketing professional who has been writing professionally for 40 years. He holds a BA in Communications and a MA in History from the University of Washington. Since 2007, he has taught at Pierce College, the University of Washington Tacoma, and Tacoma Community College, where he is currently a member of the adjunct faculty, teaching both U.S. and Pacific Northwest history. His many writing awards include Honorable Mention for the 2006 Oregon Historical Society Joe Palmer Award for the article "Old-Fashioned Revival: Religion, Migration and a New Identity for Pacific Northwest at Mid-Twentieth Century" (2006). David Norberg has taught Pacific Northwest history in Washington for nearly 14 years and currently is a full-time member of the history faculty and chair of the Social Sciences Division at Green River Community College, in Auburn, Washington. He holds a BA in History from the University of Washington and a MA in History from Western Washington University. His article, "The Ku Klux Klan in the Valley, a 1920s Phenomenon," published by the White River Valley Museum, shed new light on the conservative backlash in the region following World War I.

The three sections of the book walk you through time; provide a balanced presentation of the impacts and how they were felt differently by different peoples. Changes create winners and losers and Contested Boundaries examines those intersections. I felt a closer connection to understanding the feelings from both sides from the changes that occurred.I recommend anyone interested in history of the Pacific Northwest to read the book.Dan

Great. Made history come to life
Jepsen's and Norberg's aim was to write an engaging textbook that provides a survey of Pacific Northwest history... and they have done just that. Beginning with the first European explorations of the region, they take us from fur traders to Silicon Valley up to the standoff at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge, where in 2016 radicalized ranchers took over the reserve and eventually got one of their members killed by the FBI.To cover such a broad sweep of history in one book is always a challenge but by using the device of 'contested boundaries' they've managed to find a means of looking at all the different aspects of history and to do so coherently. Boundaries, as a theme, is pretty brilliant. And it's brilliance lies in the fact that it's a concept that extends beyond maps and territory. As they say in the Introduction, "...the region offers a rich history of people contesting boundaries set down by others." So the boundaries that are challenged would include economic and social 'norms' as well.~Reading-Wise what you'll find are very readable chapters. The authors' style is lucid and comfortable. At one point one of them says something to the effect of, let's put this greed perspective aside and take a look at what was going on with.... It's quite different from some of the dreadful old textbooks I've had to use in the past.The book is also well done from an academic standpoint. There are the usual footnotes and list of resources, and some things I particularly like, which are that there are frequent quotes from original sources and some explanation on how to use the primary documents.The only other thing I might comment on are the images. They are varied and interesting, but in my book (which I don't think is a review copy) they are your typical muddied non-color textbook type photos. They actually appear better, to me, in the ebook.
This is a new, well-researched, readable and groundbreaking history of the Pacific Northwest, from the appearance of European explorers to very modern times. It's a social, economic and political history of the states of Idaho, Oregon and Washington, tending to focus on the two latter states, and is a comprehensive look at how people, economics and resources shaped the region to what it is now.The authors meant the book as a text; many colleges in the region have courses in Pacific Northwest history. They've formatted the book with "explore more" and comprehensive footnotes at the end of each chapter, and frequent sidebar stories, 1-2 page articles highlighting something related to the chapter. As such, the book is definitely ready to serve as a well-timed, relevant and useful textbook.However, the book is appealing to history readers generally. The prose is readable and intriguing. The narrative tells of the diverse peoples who settled the Northwest, built its railroads and factories, suffered its injustices and downturns. The book is a readable economic history that tells us of the businesses that built -- and exploited -- the region, starting with the railroads and ending up with modern corporations like Boeing, Microsoft and Nike. It tells of the labor strife and violence, notably involving the IWW but also including women's labor organizing from early on -- indeed, there's much about women's movements for unionizing and for emancipation. The book's social history has much about the racial diversity, and racism, from the early oppression of native peoples to the internment of the Japanese-Americans in WWII, and on through Hispanic farmworkers' experiences later on. We learn of the inequity between the urban and rural areas, driven in part by a shift from resource to industrial economics, an inequity that continues to today. There's even a brief account of the 2016 standoff at Malheur National Wildlife Refuge between the federal government and rancher activists.For all that, the book is a lively and comprehensive look at a vibrant part of the nation and well worthwhile for those interested in American history -- and it will fill a need, quite well, as a text in the region's history curricula. Highest recommendation.
