With so many lousy, incomplete, or badly written manuals accompanying modern products, it was a delight to receive a book that serves as both a text and a handbook on Android. As a text, Mr. Huddleston has a chapter dedicated to each major Android task or function and a detailed table of contents. As a handbook, one can use the excellent Index to find any specific topic. Since the author does nto work for Android, he is able to talk about the problms of the system along with its virtues.Some newer versions of Android have come out since this book was written, so I hope the author writes an updated edition soon.
I bought this book to summarize the workings of my new Android phone. I was not disappointed. The book has lots of pictures and step by step information on getting more out of an Android phone that one would without (the advice in this book).The book retails for $24.99. At that price, I would maybe do without. But, the selling price here makes it hard to pass up for a first time Android user.
Who knew you'd need to buy a BOOK for you phone! But boy was it handy! You are after all carrying in your hands a small computer with tons of functionality, depth and more fun than you'll probably ever realize - UNLESS you read this book!!! I guarantee you will learn something. I'm a gadget junky and came from a crack-berry world. This book was very helpful.
I recently upgraded from my old cell phone to an Android phone. There was not a lot of information that came with the phone manual. This book, even though it was a generation behind my operating system, helped me learn the features of an Android system.
I bought this book for my husband as a gift. He really wanted to learn more about what his new phone could do. He was really excited when he found a reference on page 47 to the Voice Command app and that it would be covered in detail in Chapter 14. However, when he got to Chapter 14, it seems that the author forgot to put anything in that chapter about the Voice Command app. Whether due to poor editing ("we need to shorten the book -- it's getting too long") or just plain carelessness by the author, my husband found this book useless and decided he couldn't trust the author and won't buy any future books by him. The author also spent too much time putting his own personality (he likes movies and stargazing) into what should have been a more technical/informational book.
Executive summary: It was actually worthwhile for me, a guy who has used android phones since the beginning.Confession first - I got this book through the Amazon vine program because it would be free for me. I'd have never paid for what I figured to be a glorified magazine article that might turn me on to a fun app or two.I was very pleasantly surprised. Yes, there was the app here and there that proved useful or interesting. That I expected. What I didn't expect is to actually learn about stuff I'd been overlooking. After all these years I thought I knew what my phone could do, what was useful, and what was BS. Well, my current phone (galaxy nexus) really is generations ahead of that G1 from years past. A lot of capability has crept in under the radar and I didn't know about it.So... I actually spent hours going through this book that I had planned to quickly scan.Just to be specific about a few things, I ended up trying swype and voice dialing (again). Voice dialing is much better than before. Swype - well, I'm still getting used to it. I got pretty good with graffiti on my palm/handspring back in the day, swype should be about the same.I also finally decided to mess with the Amazon app store and wondered why I'd put that off for so long.Overall the book was useful enough that I stopped keeping notes of useful stuff. I knew I'd be writing this review so I started off taking notes. I stopped after a while because I was finding too much noteworthy (in a good way) stuff.This book really exceeded expectations.
At the point in time that this book was written, and for a short period of time thereafter, this was actually a very thorough book. I'm a bit late in putting up the review, and perhaps that's good, because I learned from being late on this one. It's thorough, it's detailed, and it's fairly easy to follow. I had become fairly familiar with my smart phone before getting the book, yet learned a number of things from the book, and had questions answered I didn't even realize I had. In that regard, it's basically a 5-star book.The problem is, as with most any technology-related books, it goes out of date rather quickly. I was a bit generous and still gave it a 4-star rating, because the content at publication time was truly excellent. But would I recommend it now for someone purchasing the latest in Android phones or tablets? No.I noticed this is the 2nd edition. So what's a person to do - purchase every edition that comes along as they eventually also spend money to upgrade their phones? There's probably enough of a carry over between versions that each edition of this book will be moderately useful, and sometimes highly applicable - but it would probably be a bit hit-or-miss. Therefore, the potential benefit favors the author more than the user, in my opinion. Nice job done with it, and deserving of making some money for extensive efforts - but it just has a rather narrow window of 5-star usefulness due to rapidly changing technology. It'd be a bit like all the Windows operating system books - what good are they by the time the next version of Windows comes out? There's some applicability of a Windows XP book with Windows 7, for example, but you wouldn't go buy the XP "how-to" manual with a new Windows 7 computer.Frankly, though I have serious concerns for personal privacy with Google and all the different products and services they're involved with, their search engine is a great resource for learning the same things for free (since you probably already have and paid for your computer.
