I was given the original set as a gift several years ago. I ended up leaving one of the cards in a bistro where we had lunch :( That being said, I love this box of cards! We went on several of the walks. Sometimes, we used them as starting off points, sometimes we actually finished a walk or two. They are certainly not the only thing I take to Paris, but I like them so much, I just purchased 3 boxes to loan to friends when I lead a trip in October, 2018.My only quibble is two misspellings. Ladurée doesn't have a capital D, and the marvelous little goodies sold there are macarons, not macaroons. They are totally different things, each one delicious. And you know, if that's the biggest complaint I have, that's ok!

Took these along on a recent weekend visit to Paris. Stayed in Montparnasse neighborhood for the first time this trip (have been to Paris six times before) and found the cards very fun and helpful for exploring new neighborhoods. Pretty easy to string a few cards together for a day's adventure. Also have the New York City set of these walking tour cards,

Love, love, love this desk. My boyfriend and I spent five glorious day in Paris. We rented a little apartment in the 9th and the home owner had this deck in the apartment for the guests to enjoy. Each day when we left the apartment we would grab a few city walks to do. The walks are great because they were short but informative. I like knowing the little secret facts about the city and this deck provides that. These were especially helpful when walking through a part of the city we hadn't seen before. It was a nice introduction to the area. It's like having your own personal tour guide in your back pocket. When we returned home I purchased this as a gift for my boyfriend as a fun memory of our time in Paris and as a promise to return so we can do the walks we didn't have time to get to.

I have one of the City Walks for London and New York they are GREAT, the Paris one is exactly the same. You can't go wrong, instead of having to take the entire book with you when you are walking around, you only have to take the card or cards your using that day. I'm directionaly challenged and it worked for me.

If you go to Paris with a loved one, friends, co-workers, family, or alone, the notion of just being in Paris is heady enough, isn't it? Getting lost in Paris isn't the worse thing that can happen to a person. Maybe never going to Paris is a whole lot worse. These cards are packable, portable a few at a time for daily sojourns, and help enough that any tourist using them will not be overwhelmed by the city. No, they are not perfect either in design or updates, but that's okay since Paris is. Get them, use them, enjoy having them when traveling, then leave them at a gateway airport for the next tourist to benefit. Bon voyage.

What I enjoy about this set is that it gives provides an enjoyable set of strolls both in the heart of Paris as well as a bit off the beaten path. The cards come with a map (although I find bringing a larger map along is helpful for orientation).

We used several of these while in Paris. BoyScout hubby loved being able to just peek at the map while my paranoid self loved having specific directions saying the names of streets and descriptions of the points of interest. Compact cards fit easily in my hubby’s back pocket.

Great help when you travel, it makes the most of you visit. The idea of moving around with updated information of the city and easy to carry ( just cards) is superb. Mainly because Paris is always a beautiful destination and you never seems to know each corner this cards with enough information of different routes are a wonderful opportunity to move alone ( not in a tour). This year they where our gift to my mother and she enjoys them while walking when we invited her with us to Paris, selecting a couple of cards depending where she wants to go.

The Tragedy of King Lear is a gem with keen insights into the ways that people can be superficial at their own peril and the peril of those they love. Unfortunately, I read the Kindle version. As with many Kindle books that involve formatting, the playscript was very difficult to follow due to erroneous breaks in the lines of text. Read King Lear as a physical book.

This 'interpretation' alongside the original makes for much easier reading, while making the original so readily available also gives one the 'texture' of how the original felt. There is so much meaning and so much feeling contained in this play that the interpretation is essential unless one is able to interpret all the old English terms by oneself. So, I will certainly purchase further editions by this author's interpretations for more appreciation of the many plays of Shakespeare.

Like I say about all Shakespeare: the Arden versions are my favorite. I own about a third of the Canon in them already. The footnotes are my favorite parts about it, and they're great because I don't have to carry my Lexicon around everywhere.King Lear is a brilliant play, all around. Between the family ties, the love and lust, and just the crazy existential dialogue, it's just a great read all-around.

This was helpful as a precursor to seeing a live production of the play, as it had been many years since I last read it. Shakespeare's language is, of course, beautiful, but it is also helpful to be able to glance at the "translation" to make sure I am really getting the meaning correctly.

I'm a fan of the layout of Folger Shakespeare Library. The covers are also beautiful, but the play on the right, explanation of archaic terms on the left style is very helpful to the reader and makes getting into Shakespeare much easier.King Lear is a great tragedy. It is very enjoyable.

The Modern Library/RSC Shakespeare series IS a very valuable addition. Inexpensive edition of the plays, helpful scene-by-scene summaries of the action, etc. But by far the most valuable part of the half dozen volumes I have studied is the "In Performance" sections. This is what sets this series apart from most others. Here, are performance histories detailing a variety of historic interpretations, interviews with contemporary directors and actors, revealing how they interpreted the text, and turned it into a stage drama.This Lear volume, unfortunately, is marred by the "temporally ethnocentric" and gross overemphasis upon the 1970 Peter Brook production, which perversely saw Lear as a Beckett or Brecht play. Instead of Shakespeare's profound, nuanced picture of a complex world of good and evil, with glimpses of transcendent, redeeming dimensions, we are given--as the proper touchstone to all future presentations--an absurdist, nihilistic vision of life, deliberately removing all affirmation of the worth of life, and of a distinction between good and evil! Hard to believe? Cf. pp. 166 ff. "Productions of Lear would {could?} never be the same after this." ??Even in this flawed volume, there is much to learn. And most of the other volumes I have studied in this series are not marred by such imbalanced "Mod" decadence. I hope the volume on TWELFTH NIGHT, with its gratuitous, stressed homosexualizing of several relationships, is not a sad omen for future volumes in the series.

King Lear is a brilliantly written tragedy. The characters were highly comp!ex and we'll drawn out. You can see the influence of Greek tragedies in William Shakespeare's writing. I would like to read again.

I have been reading (and going to see productions of) Hamlet since high school. I've read it many times. However, I got this edition to quickly refresh my memory before going to see a production of it recently, and it was incredible. The layout is incredibly helpful (one passage in the original Shakespearean language, the next is the modern translation) and easy to keep track of, plus it is easily understood. You can easily read just the original Shakespreare, just the modern version, or both simultaneously. I'm an avid fan of the play, and well-versed it in, and I would suggest this to beginners or even seasoned fans such as myself. Completely worth it!

"Before I Let Go" was a pretty unique piece of YA fiction- I'm not sure how to categorize it, maybe as a psychological thriller. We follow Corey from the time she found out her BFF, Kyra, has died over the course of her short trip to Lost Creek, Alaska, the place she used to know as home. Corey left town several months ago to attend a boarding school, when her mother moved away. She was really sad to leave Kyra behind, but they promised to stay in touch and wait for each other- and they were almost there. This is why Corey is shocked to hear that Kyra's death is considered suicidal (it is believed she looked for a crack in the ice and drowned).The story is told in pieces- we have the present events, events from the past few years of Kyra/Corey together, and letters which Kyra had written but not sent to Corey (plus some stylistic writing as if a screenplay). Together, it makes for an incredibly engaging story. We get to put together the pieces of Kyra and Corey separately and together through their friendship. There is a big disconnect between the town Corey left and the one she returns to. The whole story is shrouded in mystery and grief- and it had the feel of a thriller at times. The town and the people in it had a very surreal feel, almost like Stepford, where you know there has to be more to the story and it's really creepy and you're dying to figure out why. This book ended up being a quick read for me, primarily for that reason- I absolutely had to figure out what happened to Kyra and what would happen to Corey.The pace of this book is absolutely perfect, and the descriptions of Kyra really brought her to life. Corey was less well-developed, despite being the primary character. It was a really interesting format, where although being told from Corey's point-of-view, the character we get to know best and understand the most is Kyra. I also thought the depiction of bipolar disorder in this book was well done- it goes through examples of both her highs and her lows, plus some of her coping mechanisms and thoughts about the disease. It felt pretty genuine. The rest of the story felt more surreal, and considering that Kyra loved stories and fables, it almost felt like the book was it's own story (maybe enhanced in the retelling). I'm not saying that as a bad thing- it gave the overall tone an interesting quality that made it all a bit more of a mystery.Overall, I think this was a really intriguing and unique story along the lines of a psychological thriller. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Thank you Sourcebooks for the arc via Edelweiss. I really did not know how this was going to end. I enjoyed the characters and the theme of death and conquering fear. At times i felt like i was watching a scary movie. I look forward to reading other works of the author.

The concept is really good, though the back & forth structure of the storytelling gets annoying. There’s a nice depth to the characters of Corey and Kyra. None of the other characters are given enough attention to be very believable. The mental illness storyline is very interesting, but the ever-present supernatural, other-worldly backdrop detracts from that. As an older, more experienced reader, I’m looking for more. However, I do think this would be an appealing read to many of today’s teen girls.

The short chapters make this book easy to fly through. I have read better thrillers but this book kept my attention and that is not something I can say about all thrillers. I would recommend if you want a quick read.

At times sad, at others creepy. I can imagine an isolated town losing its collective sanity like what happens in this book. No winners here, only survivors.

The setting is one of the best parts of this book. The physical places -- natural and human-made -- really come through, and they're important. They're sometimes beautiful, sometimes peaceful, sometimes terrifying, sometimes confusing.Corey and Kyra's friendship felt so real and important and somehow both strong and fragile, like a Prince Rupert's drop. I've had a friendship like that (though it looked different), so I appreciated seeing that tension on page.I really appreciated Eileen, Roshan, Sam, and Aaron as side characters. And of all the other people in Lost, I found Piper in particular to be the creepiest.I do wish we knew more about Corey. I feel like I know her voice really well as a reader, and her relationship with Kyra over the past few years, but I only know a few other facts or stories about her. But ultimately, this feels like a book about Kyra and Corey-and-Kyra more than one about Corey, so maybe that's okay.I liked the asexual representation, but I wished Corey's questioning about her romantic orientation came through more clearly.

Creepy good book! Enjoyable read.

To be honest, when I ordered this from Amazon, I didn't see the sample lesson in the listing. When I ordered this set I thought it was collected phrases set to music so you could sing them to make them easier to learn and remember. That's not what's in the CD's. It's a couple speaking the phrases in English and following that with the Russian translations and pronunciations while pleasant, non-distracting music plays in the background. I'm still hoping someone will create Russian phrases as musical numbers, even as rap, but melodic songs would be better. Maybe someday. That said, here are the pros and cons I've noticed so far.Pros: I played lesson one, and after one night of practice could ask, with several phrasings, for coffee, tea with lemon, sugar or milk, beer, wine, sparkling wine, water, vodka,and say please and thank you in Russian. The woman's voice is easy to understand and her pronunciations are clear. This is lesson one of Vol. 1 of lessons and is the one you hear if you open the sample. My set has about twenty sessions and those in Vol. 2 include lessons in conversation. I did listen through the whole set before I practiced Lesson 1 to see what I could expect ahead. I think this will do nicely for learning enough to navigate as a tourist and be understood. There are downloadable PDF booklets with written phrases and terms included in the discs.Cons: Don't expect to become widely fluent in a few days or weeks. This is an easy introduction course to basic phrases and simple conversations. It will help you get comfortable with pronunciations and interactions you probably need if visiting Russia to sightsee. A number of the phrases and conversations are designed to help you if you're trying to get a date. I'm not sure they're useful for touring museums, but for those who are single, well, good luck to you. This may help your flirtations at bars and restaurants.

I am still learning Russian, after six months, and barely know phrases. Earworms Rapid Russian is a musical rendition of the most needed phrases and sentences in Russian that you need to know, especially if you travel to Russia. The dialogue has an enticing musical background, is repetitive and constitutes a sol learning experience. It can also be used as an audio to backup any Russian language learning text. The dialogue is entertaining and at times you can get caught up by the musical background. Used on a repetitive basis I have found it to be an excellent and intriguing Russian language learning experience. You should download the audio script from the internet to make the most use of it. Highly recommended.

I saw a review by a famous Polyglot (Donovan Nagle)recommending it so I gave Earworms a try. I did and it is pretty good and probably would be excellent for absolute beginners. For someone with a couple of years of Russian it is probably too simple. That said, I do like it.

I have never thought of learning this way, but I play this all of the time in my car and the words and meanings sink in.. Try it!!

Haven't opened mine up yet, but it's a great concept. I listened to a sample online and I do believe this will work for building your vocabulary.

I purchased these and have listened to them a few times. They're okay, but I'm not exactly thrilled with them either. As other reviews have mentioned, they aren't really songs at all, just speaking with music in the background.In Volume 1, they frequently break down very basic phrases into components that don't properly show how Russian grammar works. For example, they give the phrase "with milk", and then say "milk", but when doing so, continue to keep milk in the instrumental case instead of placing it back into nominative even though they removed the "with". It would be better to give milk in nominative and then show how it changes to instrumental only when accompanied with "with". In Volume 2, this issue appears to have been addressed and is done properly.Unfortunately, the male speaker used here has horrible Russian pronunciation, and that's coming from a complete foreigner. It would have been far better to use two native speakers, so that the Russian is always correct. Poor pronunciation of the English would be far more tolerable, as I already know that language and am skilled at understanding it even in poor circumstances. To spend so much time listening to someone else butcher the language I'm trying to learn and emulate isn't helpful.While I wouldn't recommend these as the sole learning method, they aren't a bad reinforcement tool to listen to in addition to other proper lessons. For a purpose like that, I wish there were actually far more of these available.

There’s something seriously wrong with Mary Roach. Conjure up any vile, disgusting, or taboo subject that anyone in her right mind would shun — and you’ll find Mary Roach has written a book about it (or is probably planning to do so). Her books to date have dealt with cadavers, the afterlife, surviving interplanetary flight, the physics and chemistry of sex, and the human digestive (and excretive) tract. And she is not inclined to use circumlocutions. She calls crap crap. I love this woman!Military science under the microscopeNow, in Grunt, her latest book, Roach has turned her attention to military science, specifically the science-based efforts by the U.S. defense establishment to clothe, train, armor, and heal our soldiers, sailors, and airmen and protect them from every manner of wound and loss of function. Unfamiliar and uncomfortable topics such as battlefield hearing loss, shark repellent, bird strikes on airplanes, diarrhea, and penis implantation figure in the story. (The only major topic she avoids is PTSD, because, she writes, “it has had so much [coverage], and so much of it is so very good.”) Roach tells her tale with brutal honesty — and leavens it with an abundance of humor. Some passages are laugh-out-loud funny. Maybe what’s wrong with Mary Roach is that her sense of humor is so much better developed than it is in the rest of us. In any case, I love what she writes.Surprises galoreUnless you are remarkably knowledgeable about the U.S. military, you’re likely to learn a great deal about how it actually works by reading Grunt.*** Consider, for example, the years-long investigation carried out by the Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) team of the United States Air Force. You’ll learn why shooting chickens out of a sixty-foot “chicken gun” at 400 miles per hour to test their impact on aircraft in flight was eventually deemed unsuitable. The scientists shifted to turkey vultures. As Roach informs us, “Though implicated in only 1 percent of Air Force birdstrikes, the weighty raptors are, by one accounting, responsible for 40 percent of the damage.” Serious people actually spent years figuring all this out!*** You’ll learn why the Army’s clothing designers crafted custom-designed tops for snipers, with pockets on the sleeves for easy access, a zipper on the side instead of the front, and no buttons, so that when lying on the ground or crawling across it their buttons won’t catch or the zipper make noise that might give away their position. (FYI, “US government button specifications run to twenty-two pages. This fact on its own yields a sense of what it is like to design garments for the Army.”) Can you imagine any army, anywhere else in the world, that would go to such lengths to outfit its troops? “In a place like Afghanistan,” Roach writes, “sweat keeps more people alive than corpsmen do.” The explanation (in Chapter 7) is fascinating.You get the point. I have never met a Mary Roach book I haven't enjoyed. She exemplifies the kind of science writing I'd love to see be the norm in high schools and even undergraduate studies. Not just for the irreverent style that follows the perpetual openings to 'go there' into fart jokes and potty mouth, the need to pursue details about diarrhea and underpants. What I love best is the deeper philosophy behind Roach's work, the persistent mystery of the human body and how we constantly need to examine it further to understand its complexities, especially when we require it to perform well amidst a lifestyle that increasingly works against it, whether that lifestyle involves nutritional needs or traveling to Mars and back. And I also love Roach's profound respect for and curiosity about the people who dedicate their lives to this kind of study. As much as her own writing shows her own commitment, she freely confesses to being a voyeur of sorts, who gets to delve into the mire of biology but gets to step away and move on to the next subject. She clearly admires those who persist for years in the topics she only has to write a few pages on.Her latest, clearly, focuses on the efforts behind the military machine. More importantly, the efforts to meet the concerns of warfare and the concerns of the bodies that move that war machine. Whether it be concerns about body armor, genital injuries or sleep cycles on submarines, Roach gets in with the scientists and the soldiers involved to not only divulge the subject itself but spotlight the people involved. What the problem is is as much a focus as Who is working on it. Scientists who mix their metaphors or who can work unfazed by the pounding of bombs nearby. She gets fascinated by the minutiae necessary to this line of work. How to convince a Navy SEAL that anti-diarrheals aren't the coward's way out of a problem? Roach gets deep into the muck of daily soldiering and the problems of BO that come up along the way.This isn't my favorite of her books, as it gets rather episodic under its own banner and doesn't carry the kind of genius narrative arc like her books Stiff and Packing for Mars did, that by learning about the use of cadavers in medical science or the concerns involved in a manned Mars mission we are learning about the human condition itself, but who can expect that kind of genius in every book? Even Dostoevsky had to admit not every book could be a Brothers K. Roach is case and point that the pursuit of science is at its heart another form of the humanities.

The well-written and engaging book begins in the aftermath of the Civil War and continues through the Obama Presidency and traces the lost opportunities for providing equality to all. Over and over again, the United States reaches a fulcrum, a moment in history, where inequities could be redressed: the Civil War, Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Era, the Obama Presidency. Rather than use those watershed moments to boldly and justly address past wrongs, the government, supported by a large swath of white citizens, undermines the gains to maintain the status quo of white supremacy.For example, instead of holding Civil War rebels to account, the federal government under Lincoln and Johnson prioritized reunification. Oppressive Black Codes went unchallenged by the federal government. Johnson in particular stymied efforts of Congress to redress the evils from centuries of slavery. Though Congress overturned his vetoes of legislation of the Freedmen’s Bureau Bill and the Civil Rights Bill in 1866, Johnson’s pardon of Southern rebels meant that their elected representatives were leaders from the Confederacy. Poll taxes and unfavorable decisions by the Supreme Court undermined efforts to provide rights to blacks.After reading this book, I feel completely and utterly gutted and outraged at the lack of justice and compassion reflected in the actions of the country’s leaders, lawmakers, and many citizens. Although there was a time that new racism was disguised by an ideology supporting color-blindness, under Trump, spewing hate based on race has become acceptable once more.I learned so much. While I knew that Southern states were resistant to the Brown decision, I didn’t realize the lengths to which they went to prevent integration. Several students were without education for years while local and state governments delayed implementation. Though I was aware of the challenges to voting rights through voter ID laws, many of the specific examples presented here were new to me.Sadly, I became disillusioned with Presidents Lincoln and Eisenhower, Lincoln for failing to name slavery as the cause of the Civil War and Eisenhower for failing to use the power of his office to enact the Brown decision. Nixon and Reagan’s racist policies disguised as tough-on-crime stances were not surprising. I also didn’t know the extent of the Supreme Court’s role in undermining progress. With some exceptions, like Brown, their rulings weakened protections of the Thirteenth, Fourteenth, and Fifteenth Amendments, undercut the Voting Rights Act, and rang a death knell for affirmative action.I regret not reading White Rage before We Are Not Yet Equal because I can’t compare them. I can attest that the latter is an important stepping-stone to dialogue on ways to halt this chain of oppression. Although written for a young adult audience (and seems appropriate for such an audience in terms of content and language), adults will find it enlightening as well. The material presented in the book is important and necessary.Although I have few criticisms of the book, I did find the chapter on the Voting Rights Act more technical and less engaging than the other chapters, though the information was important. I thought the weakest chapter was on Obama’s administration. Though it related the rancor and disrespect Obama faced, it seemed to be less grounded in research than the rest of the book. Perhaps my biggest complaint though is that there is no guidance on where to go from here. The author ends with hope that knowing about white rage can lead to a challenge of its racist consequences, but offers nothing beyond that. Maybe it will be the subject of her next book–and I would definitely read it!

Having been a person who enjoys reading history, I believed I had a realistic and reasonable view on the timeline of race in America. There was so much information in this book that I didn't know - and, be still my librarian heart, it has citations! Despite its heavy research, the book is a flowing, accessible read which means really anyone can pick it up and get something out of it.Having a narrative timeline connecting the events to each other was really helpful in getting my brain to process everything and develop a more rounded mindset. I understand more now that the history as I learned it is not history as it was carried out. Freedom in policy does not mean freedom in everyday life and attitudes. It hasn't changed as much as we would like to think it has and making the actual movement to equality is going to result in EVERYONE digging deeper into themselves, admitting and re-training themselves regarding personal prejudices, and a society that consciously works towards those goals.I'll leave you with a particularly haunting thought from the epilogue of the book. It's what has kept me thinking about this book long after finishing the ebook that I received to read and review. The author says, "Imagine if, instead of continually refighting the Civil War, we had actually moved on to rebuilding". What a statement! What would our country look like if policy had become attitudes and reality for racial equality?What could our country look like in 50 years if we decided to start right now?

This is an absolute must-read! It is a Young Adult adaption of Carol Anderson's adult book, White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide. It is relatively short (288 pages) but full of so much history that Americans must know about (but probably don't). The text is easy to understand, well-researched, and articulate. I am sure it will motivate young people to learn more about what is going on in today's headlines and to think critically about what it means to be an informed citizen.

This book was horrible. Full of only negative stories of american history. Fails to include any of the things that America has gotten right.

I enjoyed the young adult adaptation because it was a quick read. I appreciated the citations and found the book to be reliable. The entire time I read it, a coworker’s words haunted me- white privilege, whatever that is! Read this book and learn about our past that was conveniently omitted in school and broaden your view.
