This "thriller" is full of disgusting, crude language and "word packages" galore, hackneyed phrases. The plot borders on the ridiculous with nary a single character even remotely likeable except maybe the female cop (Spengler) who is a big-time cliche. The female trouncing the male is a pretty pathetic theme throughout and the writing is offensive from start to finish. Unclear why this was something the NYT thought was worth citing as a good thriller read when there are so many other better thrillers out there. Sad that the author seems so nice looking (from her website) but with a really down in the gutter mouth. NOT RECOMMENDED

This book got a good review in the NYT so that reviewer found something in this novel that this one did not. It's an airline book; one you can get through in a not very long flight and, if you miss a few pages, it won't matter. Basically, it's a whodunit without actually caring who did.A husband races down a Colorado mountain trail yelling for help as his wife has fallen off a cliff. Of course, the detectives know that it's more likely he pushed her. They find evidence to support their theory but not enough.We learn a lot about both the husband and wife, none of which endears either of them to the reader. A parallel story about one of the detectives is really just a device to make the book seem longer than it is and it's still a quick read. In fact, this book is full of devices and the plot is almost cartoon like. None of the characters are well drawn enough to make us care much about them.

This one got a good rating in the New York Times, and it lives up to its hype. Thank goodness, because I've begun to think that everything being published nowadays is a bit of a clunker, and the free-flowing praise gushing from the lips of reviewers and celebrities alike must be the result of under-the-table bribes. Or fake news. Whatever.However, "As Long As We Both Shall Live: A Novel" is a nice piece of work. Cheney's writing never loses its quick pace or meanders into non-essential doglegs in this nicely honed narrative. This is a fairly traditional police procedural, with alternating chapters giving us pieces of information about each character and the investigation. As soon as readers assume they know what is going on, they will be stunned by a revelation or a tantalizing bit of information in a later chapter. Cheney never lets up the intensity in her narrative; there is no downtime in this novel. It seemed like a much quicker read than it actually was. I flew through it.Janice Evans dies early in the novel, after discovering her husband, Matt, having an affair. Twenty years later, Matt's second wife, falls off a cliff. Coincidence? Awkwardly, Matt has been embroiled in another affair (one of several he's had during his long marriage), and the police are naturally suspicious. Especially after they find out about Janice.Everything is not quite as it seems in this twisty thriller, as the detectives are about to find out. This is a beautifully constructed novel that will ensure that dinners will go uneaten, housework undone, and anyone who depends on the reader will have to fend for him or herself. It is entrancing.

Get ready to never figure this one out and to be beholden to this book because it is so crazy good! This is JoAnn Chaneyâ€™s thriller AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE. All kinds of resentment from the get-go. As in at the wedding. The bride knows. She went through with the wedding because she didnâ€™t want to lose her deposit on the banquet hall.â€˜To have and to holdâ€™ might have been in their vows but, â€˜to cheatâ€™, oops, left that out. Possibly the groom might have taken his own special vow â€˜to murder.â€™The thrilliest of thrillers, a mind-blowing war-of-the-roses kind of volatile love, and an at one with nature couple on the edge. Get comfy because this novel will make you so uncomfortable.

JoAnn Chaney packs it all into AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE. Underlying a terrific old-school detective story is an honest and often hilarious look into marriage. The story is so fast paced and compact that I was winded when I turned the last page.Matt Evans must be the unluckiest husband on the planet. What begins as a romantic getaway with Marie, his wife of many years, turns into horror when she slips from a steep cliff in the Rockies and plunges into a swirling river. No one can possibly survive the fall, and he presumes her dead. The distraught new widower must face his two daughters with news of the unimaginably tragic death of their mother.By the time the Denver police pull a battered body from the river, Detectives Loren and Spengler have discovered that Mattâ€™s first wife also died under mysterious circumstances. Janiceâ€™s remains were found in the ruins of a fire. According to Matt, an intruder bound the young couple before setting the house ablaze. Miraculously he escaped with a minor gunshot wound and was cleared of wrongdoing when the perpetrator was found.Does lightning strike twice, Loren and Spengler want to know. JoAnn Chaneyâ€™s book stands on its own, as do many others I have recently read. Her characters are wonderful. I fell in love with the curmudgeonly, often crude, Detective Loren. Her writing is crisp, and her use of lengthy run-on sentences in parts of Marieâ€™s and Mattâ€™s internal dialogue is masterful. AS LONG AS WE BOTH SHALL LIVE is highly entertaining. What an insightful analysis of, I suspect, many marriages. Brava, JoAnn Chaney!

The presentation of this book is for the most part pretty good, with a few exceptions. The examples chosen are occasionally mystifying but mostly chosen in a way that allowed me to feel I'd learned the basic language without sitting at a console trying examples. The underlying language it describes is remarkably weird and painfully quirky, so coming up with good examples to illustrate that is not always easy. There's a bias toward the M2 implementation, but the book tries to be clear about that, and occasionally notes where that matters--it's hard to be sure without getting a lot of implementations and comparing them how thorough they were on that particular point. Still, overall, I was happy with the book.

This book has a number of shortcomings, but for experienced programmers, it is adequate. There are many typos/editing errors that detract from the readability of the text. Code examples are floated to avoid having page breaks within the example, but this has the unfortunate result of separating the example and its explanation, often by multiple pages.As someone with 25 years of programming experience in more than 20 languages, I was able to use this book to get a good introduction to mumps. However, it may not be sufficient for less experienced readers.

This book is a great concise introduction to the MUMPS language and database. As usual with programming books, it is to be read close to a keyboard, while practicing. I would recommend the fis-gtm (GT.M) compiler, that is now a Linux package.

A number of the commands listed don't have examples or explanations of their arguments. This is an insufficient reference.

Good layout as a reference, but not enough complete examples for newbies. Would help to have example programs available on the web. Still looking for such a book/url combination to follow though a full tutorial.

Good but needs more language limitations (e.g. max length of variable names, max length of global subscripts, etc...) but otherwise it was good reading. I wish the implementation had more standard features, especially in numeric global subscript sorting.

I was enamored by this book from the beginning. Of course, I am always a sucker for a sexy hero with babies. So swoon worthy.Manila has had enough of dating. Every man in her life has let her down. But Manila always wanted a family. As soon as she was in a good place, financially, she made an informed decision to be artificially inseminated and ended up having twins! Luca and Lucie were adorable!A few months after the babies were born, Manila lost her job. It became nearly impossible to find another job that would fit in with her schedule. But then luck is on her side when Manila decided to place a 'situation wanted' add.Casious is a very wealthy, sexy, gorgeous business man. He answers Manila's add and hires her as his personal assistant. Manila would work in her own office in Cassius' home. The most amazing part was that she could bring her babies to work with her.At first Cassius was standoffish and guarded with Manila. But when it came to the babies, he was openhearted and generous with smiles. It took some time but Manila and Cassius fell into a relationship. It started as casual but quickly evolved to more.I absolutely adored this sweet and sexy romance. Manila and Cassius deserved love and they longed to have that with each other. Manila wanted a man who was trustworthy and would accept her and her children. Cassius was happy to be that man; he longed for a family of his own.There is a small bit of angst but nothing that doesn't resolve quickly. But Cassius does have a secret. A big one! What will happen when all is revealed? Even though this book was a bit predictable, I still loved it. One more thing...I wished we had Cassius POV as well. I wanted to know him better and not being able to be in his head was a little disappointing and the reason for my 4.5 star rating instead of 5.

Urgh. The writing is choppy, some of the things the h does just don't make sense to me and it feels as if the story needed a lot more filling. And a boss that has a whole kitted-out baby room prepared for his single mom secretary before she even starts working there... hellooo creepy!! It felt as though the author just got her main points down and did not bother to make the story flow or give the characters any depth. The H never grew on me and honestly I just didn't care for the way their moment of realisation unfolds. If you are looking for a quick read that's semi-steamy I suppose this could be it. But if you prefer emotional development and actual character growth... this is not the one for you.

I think most romance readers could tell where the story was going, but that didn't make it any less touching. For the most part it delivered: A fast-paced story with lots of sex and a few sniffles at the poignancy. Unfortunately, the author chose to tack on a totally unrealistic happIER ever after ending that ruined the whole read for me.<<>>I don't know why romance authors feel that they always have to "cure" infertility; I don't think I've read a book yet where a couple has difficulty conceiving--even if they successfully adopt--where the woman didn't end up pregnant. The message this sends is insulting to adoptive parents, that you're not a real parent unless it's biological...similar to how in the movies the second spouse is always bumped off so that the "real" family can get back together again now that that pesky step-parent is out of the way. While miracles do happen, it is insulting to couples unable to conceive a baby to suggest that they can overcome infertility simply by having tons of sex. The fact that in this case it was the man who was sterile makes this laughable; in real life no wealthy, sterile man is going to wear a big grin and say, "I put a baby in you," when his wife turns up pregnant...instead, he's going to grab her and demand whose baby she's trying to pass off as his!Spare me the "I can see!" or "I can walk!" miracle cures in romance and concentrate on how people find their HEA endings with what they've got.

I have to say this is one of my favorite books written by penny. It was so amazing and cuts right to your heart it does this funny weird thing to your heart and makes you have all these feelings you didn't know you had. Way to go penny I loved it. Read this book people!!!!

I loved this book. Getting to know Manila was a privilege. She is such a strong women doing it all on her own. That's amazing and kudos to her.Cassius is the typical billionaire strong, determined and so sexy. But those eyes of his when Manila looks into them hides something, a secret that will make or break them.I loved every minute spent. I was honestly stunned when we got to the end. I didn't really expect that to happen. That's the beauty of a good book, the ability of catching you by surprise. Such a great read. You're not going to want to miss this.

Oh my. What a excellent storyline and the characters in this story were fantastic. The author has written a beautiful love story with the storytelling in this story were excellent and exciting to read. It's just a crazy awesome love story with some twisted relationship between the two lovers. ENJOY

An odd twist of fate gave these two people exactly what they always wanted. Love it! Steamy and enchanting short romance with the HEAâ€™s I want to read. I just wish PW would have the male leads POVâ€™s in her books. It would make it more intense I think. Regardless I enjoyed this book all the same. â˜ºï¸

Its a short story so thereâ€™s not much think and angst. Getting to know each other.But that doesnâ€™t make it a bad story necessarily.I like it.But sure, if you want a story of more backstory and maybe a POV from the male. This is not for you.If you want a steamy story, thatâ€™s sweet and easily read - this is your book!

Gray is a little unorthodox in his style. He starts off in a kind of novel form to get you into what he has to say. He seems to anticipate initial rejection because what he says agrees with the Bible. He then goes into an extensive list - which constitutes the majority of the content of the book - of facts both historical, anecdotal, and anthropological. The facts are documented inconsistently, one might show you the exact page he got it from while another will have absolutely no documentation at all.I think his goal is to convince you by the sheer volume of facts he presents and this does have an effect.Clearly, much information has been suppressed and there is much history we know little about.It did change my view of history significantly so I rate it high.

Everyone I have recommended this book to has had a hard time putting it down. Have you noticed that they have found pyramids, giant skeletons, and elongated skulls on every continent? Or wondered why there are over 600 flood stories? This book discusses these and more. The author even posits why we hear so little about alternative theories to Darwinism.This book is a game changer and will make you question what you have always believed. If you are open to new ideas, you will find plenty of them here. However, if you wish to hold on to your belief that neanderthals could do little more than draw primitive art on caves, then this book is not for you.

The information documented in this book is very eye-opening and should be read by anyone who wants to know the truth about technology in ancient times. The idea that man was primitive and is evolving to something better is based on the evolutionary theory of history. However, archeological evidence proves that this phony theory is a Big Lie. Evidence shows that ancient civilizations were highly technologically advanced. The book contains several examples of archeological remains, findings, and ancient documents that demonstrate the real history of technology in the ancient past.

This book has amazing information in it.....who would have ever thought that these things could be possible, This book showed that civilizations thousands of years ago were brilliant and had discovered and created so much that would not be possible for our "modern" civilization to reproduce! The author documents everything, and it is incredible how past generations from many countries around the world seemed to have had many of the same abilities to produce the awesome things they did.New discoveries are still taking place, and I believe the author will be coming out with a new book with some more exciting discoveries....I will be sure to buy it, when it comes out!There is one sad thing....that there have been amazing finds, in this country, but The Powers That Be do not seem to want us to know there were peoples who lived here before the Indians. There were giants, there were white skinned people with red hair. But, when these strange discoveries were made, they have been covered up and lost to us. I have read about one such discovery, in particular, where someone came upon an amazing discovery, in a cave, near the Colorado river, reported it, and the Smithsonian Institute people came out, took all the reported artifacts, and the cave was then blocked from entrance. The discoveries have been hidden, at the Smithsonian, probably never to be seen, again.

It is inconceivable that the majority of people on earth still believe that mankind "came from ... basically dirt", and eventually got better with time when in actuality there was a former people prior to Noah's flood that had technology that far surpasses man today in 2018!!! And the unbelievable amount of evidence has been here all along! And the evidence has been kept hidden from us simply because they don't want the Creator to make them guilty for wanting to serve themselves!

I have not completed the book yet, just a couple of chapters to go but what I have read so far really has blown my mind. It puts clarity into many of my personal doubts about the history we have been taught, and how so many 'facts' learnt in school never made sense or added up to my young mind then. For many years I have thought that what I was taught was made up to satisfy somebodies attempt at giving an answer to a problem that they themselves could not logically give an answer to.The only problem I have from reading this book is that it links to so many other sources of information that I am now going to have to buy these other books to get even more info and hopefully answers. It has opened my eyes to the level of information that is available that I did not know about!It is a wonderful, easy read full of interesting and exciting detail, and I personally think it should be mandatory reading for every school child around the world. This book really shakes up what we took as 'Gospel' about history, many professionals will disagree but the cannot disprove what is front of everyone's eyes.This is a book with global consequences and the details provided in it must be explored and rationally researched and discussed, we haven't been told the truth by our educators, and the contents of this book have to be brought to the masses for world-wide understanding of our past, and our potential future.A fantastic read, I highly recommend this book to all!

Thoughtful, intriguing, and (surprisingly in a contemporary novel) quirkily inspiring. Now I really need to read Mary Barton and Sylviaâ€™s Lovers.

What drew my interest to The Victorian and the Romantic: A Memoir, A Love Story, and a Friendship Across Time was the pitch about â€œtwo irresistible true-life romancesâ€ set across time. I was very interested in how two lives set apart by over a century could be linked in such a way that a book could be dedicated to it. Sadly, the pitch was not realized for me because I found neither romance irresistible. I was also hoping for a link between the two main characters of the book that would be endearing or meaningful in a way but that did not happen for me either.There is a contemporary romance angle told by the voice of the author about her love affair with an American. There is also a historical piece surrounding Elizabeth Gaskell and her supposed love affair with Charles Eliot Norton. I say supposed because honestly you have to really â€œread between the linesâ€ to imagine such a feeling existed between the two and even then I was not wholly convinced. It was a very creative imagining though.I felt that the Author did a great job making an argument for the supposed love affair that was never able to be realized between Gaskell and Norton. I also felt that she was able to show parallels for what she believed that Gaskell could have felt that were similar to that which the author was also struggling with. I think that there is a great fictional memoir intertwined with a biography about the Authorâ€™s journey with love and academia that was at times very appealing to read. Though, I absolutely would have enjoyed the story more if the historical portion had been based on solid facts and not artistic license.This review is based on a complimentary book I received from NetGalley. There, they enjoy the company of artists and writers like Robert and Elizabeth Browning and an American critic Charles Eliot Norton.The author, Nell Stevens, has written a book that is part historical fiction and part memoir. In 2013, while a she was working on her dissertation about a community of artists and writers living in 19th century Rome, a relationship develops with Max, an American, who is living in Paris but then returns to Boston. Time and distance eventually take its toll on the relationship, resulting in a break up and acute heartache. Nell finds her academic pursuits sidelined by the break up. She turns to her favorite author, a subject of her research, and sees similarities in their bond of unrequited love.This was such an interesting concept to combine two genres. What drew me to this novel was the great Gaskell, one of my favorite authors, but I found I equally enjoyed the author's memoir. The modern romantic is not so different from the Victorian romantic. Both seem to think that marriage and children are necessary for fulfillment, but does a woman need both to feel whole and content? And what of creative and professional pursuits? Can that be enough of a substitute for a family? Gaskell had all three, making her a role model for the author, but was Gaskell content? Lots of food for thought on this one!

Nell Stevensâ€™ long anticipated memoir/historical novel The Victorian and the Romantic is one of a few Advance Reader e-books I received from my friends at Doubleday Books and netgalley.com, and I thought it was such a fun book! The Victorian and the Romantic switches back and forth between chapters that focus on the life of Victorian author Elizabeth Gaskell, and chapters that talk about Nellâ€™s experience with love and heartbreak while studying to get her PhD. I thought the way that Stevens was able to connect her own situation of falling in and out of love with a similar situation involving an author that she greatly admires was a very interesting concept, and she did it quite well. I donâ€™t really want to spoil any part of the book for you, but I will say that I particularly enjoyed that the book doesnâ€™t really end in a way that you might expect it to, but that both Nell and Mrs. Gaskell still feel fulfilled regardless. The Victorian and the Romantic is a pleasant book not just about love, but about growing up and making hard choices. I flew through this book relatively quickly, and I really liked it! Itâ€™s available in bookstores now, so be sure to give it a read!

not sure why Elizabeth Gaskell was chosen to parallel author's own story. seems like there is no connection. not sure why the author gains inspiration from Gaskell. but the two stories held my interest. i also think the characters were too self absorbed. i wish I could run around to London and read Victorian novels all day.

It was hard to discern between the biographical portions on Elizabeth Gaskell and the fantastical delusions of author Nell Stevens. The book is easy to read and that's a credit to Nell -- or is it Helen? -- but she simply goes off the rails when it comes to the personal narrative about Max. Also, the details in the book do not match up with the "facts" of Nell's/Helen's Modern Love essay in the New York Times, which she cribbed from Chapter 15 of the book.

I really loved The Victorian and the Romantic, as a book partially about literature, but also about the author's relationship to literature and to academia. The book is in part a biography of Elizabeth Gaskell, but also it is about how readers in the present think about the past, and is written really beautifully in a way that reflects both those things.

Ting-xing Ye, called Ah-Si because she was the fourth child in her family, was born in 1952. Her father was the prosperous owner of a Shanghai factory, which was confiscated by the government in 1959. The authorities promised compensation, but when he demanded that it actually be paid, he was forced to do menial work in the factory. Paralyzed by a fall, he died three years later. Ah-Si's mother suffered a painful death soon after. Their children were labeled capitalists and landlords, automatically signaling trouble for them. When Ah-Si was 16, she was sent to a prison farm near the Yellow Sea, where she survived for six years. Eventually, people left the countryside, and Ah-Si passed the entrance exam for Beijing University, the only person in the prison camp to do so. This book includes a bit of insight into the infighting that was going on in China between the forces backing Mao and those backing Lin Biao, his second in command. Nothing is pretty about Ah-Si's description of the life she led, but she did what she was asked and survived because of the strength of her character and her resilience. Poignant and touching story of a trying time in China;s recent history.

A potential reader trying to assess the content of this memoir of almost four hundred pages by looking at its title, the portrait and back-cover summary would perhaps categorize it as a dreary tale of woe by an escapee from the chaotic social and political nightmare that comprised the Chinese Cultural Revolution. Yes, it is about that: a tale of horrendous suffering and deprivation, denial of justice and human compassion, a family torn apart by poverty and displacements enforced by the arbitrary decisions imposed by a dysfunctional autocracy. It is about how an ancient civilization ingrained with quaint superstitions and Confucian principles tries to adapt to new ways; but the rules are constantly changed in worshipful obedience to a dictatorial despot, Chairman Mao. But this is never a dreary tale.The author, whose familiar name is Ah Si, Number 4â€”designating her birth orderâ€”born in 1952, grows up in Shanghai not long after the Communist takeover in 1949. She loses her parents at a young age and becomes dependent on her unmarried aged Great-Aunt. She and her four siblings exist in poverty, trying to sustain themselves during famines, economic disruptions and social chaos. Because her father had been a factory owner she is labeled as belonging on the wrong side of the factional struggles. This is a shadow that hangs over her no matter how much she tries to overcome her hardships. She is sent away to work on a prison farm where conditions are inhumanely primitive and authority carries a big stick for anyone who fails to toe the line. But Ah Si is a survivor who against all odds eventually is placed in a position of influence as a translator and becomes a co-ordinator of receiving and entertaining foreign dignitaries. In the meantime she has married and become a mother. But curiously she has to accede to having a second male, who is infatuated with her husband, to be their constant companion.This is a well written book. It does not linger on setbacks and futility but moves on to take in the main events, the changes, the challenges, the twists of fate, the glimpses of hope that keep Ah Si struggling towards a better life. The book has the heart and spirit of an enduring optimism. When Ting-xing Ye was born her aunt stated: "Ah Si shi ge lao lu ming" meaning that "Number Four will have a difficult life because the signs were unlucky".It wasn't long before Ting-xing would find out how true those prophetic words would be. Her life was soon turned upside down due to China's Cultural Revolution. Ting-xing and her four siblings lost both their parents and it was shortly after that their lives changed forever. Her family's home was attacked by the Red Guard's as well as their schools. Already drowning in hunger and poverty, Ting-xing, at the age of sixteen, was sent to a prison farm far from her home. There she suffered more brutality, long hours of labour and unending meetings with Guards.At one point Ting-xing is forced for hours upon hours to write down her sins against the Revolutionists but she hadn't made any and her captors would hear none of it. They slapped her, punched her and yelled at her for hours and hours to write something down on the paper they provided.Ting-xing is spirited and audacious and keeps fighting to save herself in the midst of events that she had no control over.An engaging, edge-of-your-seat read. At times you can't believe your eyes and what you're reading. To think that human beings had to endure the hardships that Ting-xing did. This is a story of bravery and survival.

The older children needed to find jobs to support the others. Then their mother died of cancer and the children were totally on their own.Number 4 found herself in the middle of the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution. She was treated poorly because of her upbringing as a capitalist and protested with other students in Beijing. She made a brave decision to work at the prison farm in exchange for her sisters to remain in Shanghai.Life at the prison farm was grueling and Number 4's capitalist background causes the guards to bombard her with questions. Yet Number 4's spirit and drive remain strong and she knows she has the courage to succeed.This was a very good novel full of history about a time period that Americans may not be familiar with. Some of James Patterson"s best ever. Amazing, exciting, and hard to put down. There were more twists in this book than I care to count. The author definitely did his research, and the ending was more surprising than I could ever have imagined. I highly recommend this book, excellent reading!!!

Never a dull minute as in almost all other books I read. I just wish he would put them on sale every now and then so I could afford to read ALL of his awesome books. Patterson is by far my favorite author!

A very powerful message and book. Very hard to put down. Amazing writer as always. I thoroughly loved it. I was curious with the new turn his writing was taking how it would go but it was beautifully done.

Well, aside from the ending (which was just odd and felt incredibly rushed), I really liked this book! I'm not a religious person (in fact, I usually avoid ALL religious crap), but I didn't feel like this book was jamming it down my throat.The story was told at a great pace and the writing was good! I found myself being disappointed whenever I had to put this down and really excited to pick it back up. Which virgin would bear the child of Satan, and which would bear the Savior?As I said, the ending was a bit out of place and rushed when compared to the rest of the novel, and there was a bizarre 'Prologue' at the end of the book that COMPLETELY confused me. I still have no idea what purpose it served as (at least to me) it had nothing to do with the book. In fact, I thought it was a preview of another James Patterson book (you know how authors will sometimes include a few chapters of another book at the end of one?) but it wasn't. Very strange.Anyway, overall it was a good story and it kept me coming back...maybe more of a 3 1/2 star book, but I'll round up.

I almost gave up reading this book. The beginning is interesting enough, but then Patterson gets boring. Later in the book I ended up struggling because of the perspective jump between 1st and 3rd person. I'm glad I kept with it simply because the ending is amazing. If there's another book following this one though, I think I might pass on it.

A fantasy today, but who knows what could happen in the next 50 years. The book is getting worn out from reading several times, and loaning to others. Don't want to give away the plot, but wouldn't one's greatest fantasy (other that winning the lottery) to be able to fly? I never lost my interest each time I read it.

This is a complicated religious story. It is quite unbelievable. It has a Satan and a Savior. More than one Savior is hard to believe.

Patterson has once again drawn me in to each event, each page. I never stopped reading til the answers were clear. I can't wait to begin the next book, but must get some sleep. Still feel a pull to know truth for sure. As always, John Patterson has gotten my brain into another place and kept me thinking.
