Review
"Jonathan Brooks ("Pastah J") is one of the most authentic, credible, and prophetic voices in the church today. Church Forsaken is a holy wake-up call for every Christian to not overlook the beauty in the brokenness around us. This book will have you looking for the glory of God in every place and person including yourself." (Shawn Casselberry, executive director of Mission Year, coauthor of Soul Force: Seven Pivots Toward Courage, Community, and Change)"Church Forsaken brilliantly demonstrates that we love God by loving our neighbor, and one of the primary ways we love our neighbor is by loving our neighborhood. This book is a bold dare to all followers of Jesus to discover anew the breadth and depth of the gospel by becoming faithfully present within our parishes, not just as individuals, but as the body of Christ. Jonathan Brooks fosters a desire within me to be part of a real local church." (Dwight J. Friesen, associate professor of practical theology at the Seattle School of Theology & Psychology, author of Thy Kingdom Connected)

This was a fascinating book. Although the theme is centered around raising Church awareness in it's own communities, I feel as though it applies to anyone- religious or not-to look into self awareness. The message of self awareness and community is important considering the current climate/issues we're experience today. I myself am not a religious person or belong to a church but grew up in a similar community and mindset. I found myself reliving similar views/thoughts of wanting to get as far away from where I grew up. This book was eyeopening in re-examining where I came from and appreciating the what I learned/obtained from those experiences. Highly recommended for everyone as it is a quick read and very insightful.
This book will make you think about new/great ways to serve in the community. You always hear negative press about the city of Chicago but Pastah J is turning things around. This brother is an excelling in his community and his story/message need to be spread around this country. Amen to you Pastah J, you truly using God's gift to spread good in this world.
Timely read for the Church. Lessons can be applied in any community. Thank you for writing! Excited to learn as you continue to live this out.
I purchased this book to support my pastor. The words from the book bought me to a better belief that there is No place we can go where the hand of God cannot reach. Every person in any community is loved by God, and not God forsaken!
Thought provoking. Easy to read. I have gone to an inner city predominantly black church all my life. Many of the points hit home

I am reviewing a copy of The Church Forsaken through InterVarsity Press and Netgalley:
The author of this book was raised in the Englewood Neighborhood on the south side of Chicago. When he was able to he left and moved as far away as he was able. But through a remarkable turn of events he found himself not only back in Englewood but also serving as a Pastor as well as a community leader.
In this book Jonathan Brooks challenges local churches means to rediscover that loving our neighborhoods.
Using the themes of Jeremiah 29, he shows how Christians can be completely present in local communities including doing things like building homes and planting community gardens.
I give The Church Forsaken five out of five stars!
Happy Reading!
I was meant to read this book, it was definitely placed in my lap, or Kindle, by God. I have never read a book about the church that I found instantly relatable and could be immediately to practice. Jonathan not only points out the problems, but gives proven solutions. This entire book was so easy and wonderful to read. It should be read by everyone, not just those in ministry, but believers and unbelievers alike. So much can be gained by a mutual understanding of the situations addressed in this book.I cannot sufficiently express how much I learned from this book. I look forward to seeing what more Jonathan writes and how much more he improves his community and the church as a whole.
I LOVE this book almost as much as I love the person who wrote it. I told Pastah J over and over that whenever he finally wrote a book I would give it to all of my students and also scream from the mountaintops. And so this is me screaming! I have already been ordering copies and sending them to people all across the country who are struggling to love the place the Lord has carried them to and planted them. We live in a time where we are over educated, and we think we exist above place. We build community via the interwebs, our phones are permanently attached to our hands and many of our interactions with other humans are transactional. We have forgotten that PLACE and human connection are sacred. That the Lord has always, always worked through place. There are many books out there that tell us WE are the answer to the challenges in urban and rural communities and that we need to go there to change them. THIS book reminds us that the solutions are already in the community, the Spirit is already moving and that when we GO or when we STAY or when we RETURN to the places the Lord leads us (often the places we don’t want to go) we are the ones being changed. The part that is difficult for me is that we are called to settle into the places we’re called and be fully present not “until†the Lord calls us elsewhere but UNLESS God calls us elsewhere. Church Forsaken is also for STUDENTS!!!! The campus is not just an idea, the campus is a place!! “There is no place on earth that God does not care about.†We are the ones that abandon places, the Lord does not forget. The stories in this book are the stories that have guided me since I was a bright eyed student participant in CUP and Pastah J was a speaker. What a gift to have Pastah J’s incredible storytelling in written form! Order a bunch of copies to give as a fantastic Christmas gift! Books are a great way to show love! Thank you, dear brother, for your love and labor in Englewood, in the Church and through this book! We need your voice so much right now!
