I really enjoyed this book. For context, I'm a former tank officer who served in 3-66 AR, 2nd Armored Division (aka Patton's Division, Hell on Wheels). As a former tanker, I found the book especially interesting, but I think it can be appreciated by laypeople too. There were a few areas that Robeson does particularly well:First, the overview of the development of the tank from WWI, through the interwar years, and even during the 4 years of WWII was very interesting. Robeson strikes the right balance on depth of detail, giving more than a cursory review but not bogging the reader down in a lot of detail. There are a few places where he risks getting too detailed, but they pass quickly. This overview of the tank evolution comprises the first half of the book, and you could read that half alone and get a lot of value out of the book.Secondly, the author sprinkles in enough quotes and anecdotes from soldiers to give the reader a feel for what life was like within the tank crews and their units. I was amazed at how similar it was to what I experienced 50 years post while serving in an M1A1 battalion in the 1990s. This personal touch made the read more interesting than if it had simply been about either just the technical or the geopolitical aspects of tank warfare. Finally, Robeson does a good job of interweaving the technical development with the strategic and tactical needs and development. Personally I gained a new appreciation for the Sherman tank. I had always been under the impression that the German Panzers and even the Soviet T-34 were better tanks and wondered why we couldn't equip our soldiers with tanks of equal quality. Robeson highlights the strategic practicalities the senior Army leadership had to deal with that constrained the Sherman's design, including the need to be shipped to Europe for an amphibious assault, versus the German tanks that could simply drive from the factory to battle. In all I found the book to be a highly enjoyable read. It's a must read for any tank aficionado, but I think it will be enjoyed by any fan of military history.John PearsonWest Point class of 1994

A child of 13, who is a Call of Duty fan, loved it!

Excellent treatment of the development of the Armored Force.Addresses the infighting between cavalry, infantry, and armor lobbyists for control of tanks during interwar years. The "case study" of the 781st tank battalion provides well rounded history of American tank experience during war.
