This paperback is a surprisingly detailed review of Navajo rug-making and the different styles woven. A few more illustrative photos would make it better and the captions could be worded more specifically. It is a bit old w/ a reprint date of 1996.
Want to learn about different kinds of patterns and a bit of history about the patterns? This book is a great introduction to the history of Navajo rugs, changes in styles, how styles follow the market, how traders influenced design, and a bit of history of some of the weavers, and how area can influence design and weave type. Its a great beginners book.
Excellent Book on Navajo Rugs. Great for the collector, giving some history and what to look for, as well as for the Navajo Rug Weaver. Good, basic information to help you make sure you're buying a genuine rug woven in the Navajo way. I enjoy reading about the history as I do weave Navajo Rugs and find everything I can read of interest. This is not a how to weave a Navajo Rug Book. There are many other weaving books out there on How to Weave Navajo Rugs. The Navajo Rug Collector/Historian would enjoy adding this book to their library.
Useful for people generally interested in rugs at a high level, but not so useful for readers that really want details of navajo rug making history, age dating, or process.
A very concise guide to the different designs from different areas of the Navajo Reservation. They are all truly works of American art, and usually, sadly, undervalued, especially if you factor in the time spent from sheep to finished rug!
