I really like how he told his story his way it’s actually what makes the book great in my opinion. How He grew up in the rough section of queensbridge suffering from mental issues and made it to the NBA and become successful pretty awesome
As I was born in New York… played and loved basketball… had dreamed of playing basketball for St. Johns University… and had a Dad who had graduated from St. Johns… I followed Ron Artest’s (now known as Metta World Peace) career since he was a teenager attending St. Johns. The innumerable mostly self-inflicted “bumps†in the road of his life… were to an outsider… seemingly endless. Reading this choppy book brings back memories… and adds even more non-justifiable personal assaults on himself… that were either forgotten over time…. or had been kept behind locker room doors till now. The author’s writing style… really can’t be judged as any type of artistic “styleâ€. The entire storytelling from start to finish… seems almost as if … the author put a tape recorder in front of Artest (I’m still used to his original name after over twenty years) let him talk away and then days later had it transcribed. As a fan of Ron’s… you enter the book… pulling for him… and early on you even see a sweet naiveté… when he says he wants to be a math teacher… “because in math every problem has a solution.†Not only did that not work out… but when he got to St. Johns ("like the late-great George Costanza) he wanted to be an architect. Between his drinking and drug use… architecture was nothing but a pipe dream.I have read many… many… books in my life… and I have never ever… heard so many apologies… unfortunately… as sure as night follows day… after each apology… is another mistake. Additionally… he in some way or another… compliments every coach he has… AFTER… he leaves that team. The biggest question that the reader is left with after making it through this book… is what kind of non-existent drug testing do they have in major college and the NBA??? Ron/Metta didn’t even flinch in talking about his drug use in college and the pro’s. (and philandering)It’s certainly nice that after being given the largest non-drug suspension in NBA history for his part in the infamous Malice In The Palace in 2004… he was later awarded the J. Walter Kennedy NBA Citizenship Award in 2011… but more chaos continued to follow… and some of his comments seem incredulous… such as…. “I WANTED TO BRING THE STREET TO THE NBA. IT TOOK ME YEARS TO LEARN THAT THE NBA WASN’T THE SAME AS THE STREET. THERE WERE NO GUNS OR DRUGS ON THE COURT.â€I don’t even know what to say about such a comment. Near the end of the book (not a spoiler… that wouldn’t be possible) He says…. “I didn’t have the educational background that prepared me to own anything. I sometimes wish that I stayed at St. John’s to earn a degree in economics or business, so I would have the background and knowledge to better run my business. I had to learn that as I went along. That’s why I encourage players to take their education seriously and get their degree, so they have something to fall back on when they can no longer play basketball.â€That right there is the final impact statement of a book full of “do what I say… not what I doâ€â€¦ ------mistake…. Fill in the blanks….. ---- fill in the apology.
Usually a sports memoir will follow the same pattern. An ex-athlete will talk about his childhood, his career while playing his chosen game and his life after retiring. While some of this is true for Metta World Peace (formerly known as Ron Artest), his story takes on extra meaning because of his willingness to talk about his mental health issues so candidly. He does verify some of his more off beat moments, such as working at Circuit City while still a player. He does speak frankly about the infamous brawl in Detroit during the 2004 season that cost him nearly five million dollars in salary and many years of bad memories. But it's clear to a reader that he has turned things around and, appropriately enough, seems to be at peace with himself.Any basketball fan who knows about Artest/ World Peace should pick up this book. A great and fast read, one will be happy with the eventual outcome of a man who finally is at peace with himself.
Really good book. MWP came from a real struggle and grew into a very a flawed, but very compassionate man. Anyone from the inner city can sympathize with his stories of blacktop basketball and drug dealers. More detail would have warranted 5 stars.
