I am happy to be able to say this book is not one of them. This book has depth as well as value.There are several aspects I like about this book that I am going to write about in no particular order, because I like them all equally.First I will mention the writing style. The authors have an easy to read writing style that makes the book an enjoyable read.I love all the history in it. The book does a great job of covering the evolution of cryptoassets. They cover the good, bad, and ugly of bitcoin’s history and bring us into the present world of decentralized applications.The authors break cryptoassets into cryptocurrencies, cryptocommodities, and cryptotokens. They cover each one in detail and give a lot of examples of each in existence today. The examples include bitcoin, Litecoin, Ripple, Dogecoin, Dash, Monero, Zcash, Ethereum, Auger, dApps in general.I like that the author’s are not cryptozealots. They paint a realistic picture of the landscape and give fair warning to those that may embark on a ride of the cryptoasset roller coaster.The authors provide an analysis and valuation framework that lays out the elements to look for and analyze when deciding on weather or not an investment would be worth it. Their framework not only does a great job of listing all the elements, but they also do a great job of putting them into context, explaining their role, and what to look for.Another thing I have spent hours in is all the notes. They have a ton of great references. These totally sidetracked me several times.When I read a book I mark the outside with things I want quick access to or want to remember. I have added 2 pictures to the review to show you there is a lot of things you’ll want to recall as you go through your journey.If you are thinking about investing in cryptoassets, this book is a must read.

Cryptoasets: The Innovative Investor's Guide, provides a clear, concise overview of a rapidly emerging market and group of tools that will impact our lives for the better. Context is everything. I am not a professional trader or investor. Prior to getting involved with cryptoassets, I wasn't even remotely a hobby trader. I contributed to my retirement through work in typical mostly hands-off ways i.e 401k or mutual funds. I got involved with Bitcoin because I liked the technology and the societal implications. Once that hooked me, I had to figure out how to put that interest to use. That is where Chris Burniske and Jack Tatar come in with Cryptoassets. The authors provide a timely description of the investing landscape without turning over every stone or looking behind every tree. They paint with broad brush strokes using various cryptoassets to articulate a point. Without getting bogged down in too many details that change quickly in cryptomarkets, they filled in significant knowledge gaps and helped me understand how much I did not know about investing or how cryptoassets compare to conventional assets. There is a place for the highly technical description of cryptoassets or investing. That is not this book.The authors start with a brief historical overview, beginning with the 2008 financial crisis, providing a narrative baseline that helps make Bitcoin and all the cryptoassets that came after, make sense. The description of the technical aspects is not too complicated, while providing a clear solid description of what blockchain is and why it matters as an innovative leap forward. When discussing Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Golem, etc. many people default to calling these assets "coins" or "cryptocurrency". The authors do not do this. I think, one of the key points they bring to the discussion is that cryptoassets are not simply currency. Cryptoassets include currencies, along with commodities, and tokens. As the market matures understanding this will become more important. The distinction the authors make by focusing on assets verses currency also helps as they move through the topic of investing and how to determine the merit of one asset type over another.For someone who has not followed the development of cryptoassets from 2009 to the present, the description of how cryptoassets have been received by the traditional investing community and the US government, was particularly useful. It provides a picture of how developed the market is and what needs to happen for the market to continue mature relative to existing practices. As a prior hands-off/non-investor the discussion of financial tools like exchange traded funds (ETF), or the recent development of initial coin offerings, or initial cryptoassets offering, (ICO) and the current government perception of taxing cryptoassets was all very helpful. Most likely, cryptoassets will transform investing more than they already have. The book suggests possible ways this might play out without being overly rigid with assumptions.Practical overviews of exchanges, wallets, mining, were also helpful. There is an inherent limitation in discussing these subjects. The technical aspect can easily get mired down in quickly changing minutia, which is not the point or strength of this book.The authors also address the merit of cryptoassts as an asset class. They provide a defense of cryptoassets and, by comparison show how cryptoassets differ from money making schemes and fraudulent ways of separating people from their money. That is not to say no cryptoassets are scams. Like with fiat currency, scams exist within the crypto world. Cryptoassets are not inherently a scam. In fact, they offer many benefits. Although I was already convinced of the value of cryptoassets, these sections strengthened my own understanding and ability to talk with other people.I've ordered and read several books on cryptoassets. This book is easily one of the best places for a beginner or dabbler to start growing their understanding of cryptoassets and investing. It does an excellent job of introducing both. It should be in any crypto-investor's library. I hope as the market and technology develop this book is updated in order to remain current. As of early 2018 it is still quite relevant.I bought the Kindle, Audible, and hardcover versions. The Audible narrator, Dave Clark, made the sections I listened to easy to follow. I would listen to him again without reservation.

Definitely the most informative book on crypto assets so far. I have read 7 books so far on crypto-assets and bitcoin and whatnot but most of them were more like pamphlets and had information based on just that specific individual and how he became crazy rich and what not. This book, however, goes in deep dive to teach you the aspect of the regular financial market and bring that around on how bitcoin and other crypto-assets could mature around the current financial system. The use graphs, equations historical data to teach you about crypto assets and markets. This book definitely qualifies to be read twice in my list.

This is by far the most intelligent book I’ve read on investing in cryptocurrency. It applies the standards for evaluating all other investments to the cryptocurrency asset class. I suspect many investors will learn something about investing in general as well as how to apply it to cryptocurrency.My only criticism is that the book’s view of cryptocurrency doesn’t include an interesting class of tokens focused on exchange for assets (and to some extent being asset-backed). I own several of those currencies and don’t find that the book’s approach to evaluating the cryptocurrency applies. Maybe that will be addressed in future editions.There should be future editions of this book. The book cuts off at the beginning of January 2017 and we all know the explosion in cryptocurrency since then. I hope the authors revise and extend the book using their sound methodology so it doesn’t go too far out of date. We need more books like this with good investment advice and no hype.

"The Butcher of Anderson Station" is the first of the short stories set within The Expanse universe and reveals relevant back story to one of the most interesting supporting characters of the Leviathan Wakes novel: Fred Lucius Johnson. In the story we experience the events of the Anderson Station incident as seen through Fred's eyes and get some insight as to his political motivations and change of loyalty. The story also reinforces the blood-stained politics that underlie the various planetary governments in The Expanse series.The Kindle book is actually quite short. On my Nexus 5, the book paged out as: the first 3 pages are cover and publisher boilerplate, then 48 pages of actual story content, 3 pages of "if you liked, then try" suggestions, and finally a 16 page sample of Ancillary Justice by Anne Leckie (terrible book, IMHO). I felt like I finished the story in less than 15 minutes and it might merit 1 re-reading. The story itself uses a literary viewpoint that jumps between two past points in time relative to the timeline in Leviathan Wakes.My personal preference when reading is to have a real paper and pages book. It would be nice to have all of The Expanse short stories and novellas collected into a single print book (at a nice cost savings to boot) at some point in the near future. The Butcher of Anderson Station is the budget Kindle item in the short stories/novellas for the Expanse, but I don't think I'll buy any of the others until they drop in price a bit or are collected into a printed volume.

Great short story to fill in The Expanse universe. BUT!! DO NOT BUY THIS IF YOU ALREADY OWN RECENT COPIES OF ALL THE OTHER EXPANSE NOVELS. I don't recall exactly which novel, but this story is included as part of one of them. I own physical copies of the first 5 books and bought all the novellas for my kindle. About a page into reading this it was vary familiar, and I realized it was something I had already read in a chapter about Fred in either book 2 or 3. So, it's a good side story, but if you have full copies of all the novels, you already have this story.

As a novella, I'll assume you have read, "The Expanse," series, or at least some of the books. This prequel helps us understand how the, "Butcher of Anderson Station," became the legitimate arm of the OPA. It's well told, James S. A. Corey gives Fred Johnson, a more three-dimensional character, while shedding more light on the plight of, "Belters." The story is both moving and is in sharp contrast to other Sci-fi novels, since, at it's core, this story is about racial injustice, and inequality, which is happening even today! Truly, a must-read for anyone following the expanse series!

Throughout the seven 'The Expanse' novels, reference is periodically made to Fred's former life as a commanding officer in Earth's Navy, and oblique reference is made to the 'Anderson Station' incident. This brief novella fills in the back-story of that incident, and why Fred switched sides and became a member of the OPA.I'm glad I read this little novella, but it is really little. I reached the end and started scanning around for the next chapter, as I figured there had to more than just this little bit. But, that indeed is all there is. I find this somewhat surprising, given the 'thickness' and scope of the novels, and I almost feel a little taken advantage of, and ripped-off. The 8th novel won't be available until some time near mid-2019. In the meantime, I can pay what amounts to about the Kindle price of one of the novels to get a number of little snippets that, by all rights, probably should have been in one of the novels anyway.

I loved this. This story had the perfect balance and harmony to it. Smart and well-written, giving us what happened at the station and how Fred ended up in the OPA all rolled up into one story.I am extremely picky about flashbacks, especially in short stories, but I couldn’t categorize what Fred’s story did as flashbacks. They felt like memory slips. Each moment synchronized with the next. Natural and smooth. The momentum of the story always went forward. This could’ve gone very wrong. Short stories are for a moment in time, a very specific moment for the character. And the authors succeeded in pulling off that moment with effective use of the memory slips.

I'd read some of James Corey's Expanse novels a while back and totally not seen that "The Expanse" on the SyFy channel was based on his novels. Yeah okay I can be oblivious. I think I was in episode three before I heard them mention, "The Butcher of Anderson Station" a character who'd stuck with me all this time and I realized I had Expanse novels on my iPad, so I fired it up and found that previous self had already downloaded "The Butcher of Anderson Station." It was a great quick read and connected many of the dots I was seeing in the series. WHich is also excellent if I do say so.

Interesting look into a very popular and common historical moment in the Expanse universe. Throughout the series you get the feeling that the Belters are treated poorly and looked down on as less then the Inners. The monologue by the leader of the Belters who took control of the station was a great and necessary insight into how poorly Belters were treated and lead to a great revelation into the recruitment of the Butcher and Hero.

This piece provides the backstory for an important, but not primary character in the first book of the Expanse series. It is set before the action of The Leviathan Wakes, but I am not sure that it would be as satisfying a read if it was read first. (I read it second and loved coming to a better understanding of the character, but don't believe that it would have had the same impact without the larger context of the first novel. On its own, it is a marvelous example of how much can be done with plot and dialogue. It is clear that Corey (pen name of Abraham and Franck) are terrific writers. If you want a taste of their writing, give this a shot. If you read The Leviathan Wakes first, make sure to take a moment to tuck this one in before going on the second book in the series.

I became aware of this book when I was in my teens, finally read it when I was 30. My life would have been better if I had read it sooner. Buy this for your kids, make sure they read it, then make sure they learn the right things from it.As literature, this book is just OK, hence the four stars. Rand was not a native English speaker. That she managed to write this well in a second language is amazing. I would have written this book differently, but I didn't write it. Everything after The Big Long Speech is necessary, I suppose, but kind of sophomoric, definitely a B movie. As science fiction, the book is laughable, but I suggest you cut the author some slack and go with it. As an exposition of important ideas, this book has no equal. If you want to know what's wrong with the world, you can start here. It is important that you not *end* here. Think of this book as a laxative. Once you have ingested this, you can work on restocking your mental gut with better food than our culture has given you.Speaking of speeches, this book has lots of them. I have a friend who says this is her favorite book, but she also says she has never read the speeches. Here's news for you: if you haven't read the speeches, you haven't read the book. Knowing her, I suspect that if she read the speeches, it would no longer be her favorite book. Atlas Shrugged is an assault upon your morals. Some people are surprised to learn that their morals deserved to be assaulted. Some never get over the fact of the assault, assuming the problem lies with the author and her infernal book. No. The problem lies with some very old and pervasive ideas that turn out to be senseless, destructive, murderous, and just plain wrong. Some of us sort of knew that all along, but thought we were the only ones who thought so. It's a relief to see this out in the light of day.I believe the author's strategy is to make you tired. The main character tries way too hard before capitulating, allowing the author to write yet more episodes illustrating the corrupt and coercive muck we wallow in, the stuff you've encountered all your life, perhaps wondering if life really had to be this way. No, it doesn't. The aforementioned Big Long Speech is one of the greatest things ever written. But the author has to soften you up first.Some people read this and get strange. This is probably to be expected after somebody hits the reset button on their morality. It takes a while to figure out what to do next. A few people never recover, becoming something like Jesus Freaks. Most readers eventually resettle their minds, but in a different place than it would have been if they hadn't read this book.Still need a reason to read this book? It will help you say No when No needs to be said. It might even save your life. Really.

I am not against a lengthy book, but a self indulgent 1000 plus page manifesto in which characters give uninterrupted speeches that take four hours to read and serve no purpose other than to preach the author's philosophy is completely unnecessary. The book did clearly demonstrate Ayn Rand's philosophy through the characters of John Galt, Francisco D'anconia, and Ragnar D. I didn't need the sililoquies. I loved the character of Danny Taggart, who is portrayed as a woman ahead of her time considering the era in which this book was written. Can't stand Hank Reardan, who is supposed to be a hero, but is just an arrogant, if intelligent, putz.The writing style was awful...I would really love to know how many times some form of the word "astonish" is used in the book. Rand seems to need to state the most mundane points in both the positive and negative fashion. She would not say "Dagny was happy..." She would say "Dagny was, not sad, but happy. That is to say she was filled with joy, she was joyous. She was not downtrodden, but rather, pleased." This is not a quote from the book, but would have fit right in. Goodness, Ayn, leave it at happy, we all get it. Rand does write some great triumphant moments...especially when her heroes accomplish a monumental task or, pull off a dramatic act of rebellion. These are the moments that push you through the drivel. Examples: the first run of the John Galt line, or when John Galt instructs the clueless politicians in how to repair their torture machine.As for her philosophy...I am not in agreement. The world she portrays in Galt's Gulch would not be the end result of a nation which accepted her primitive , childish, self-centered, arrogant and elitist tenets. Her true society would look like a bunch of four year olds, sitting on top of their toys, crying mine, mine, mine!

The novel is written in a modern popular style and is mostly highly readable. Probably the most difficult part of reading this book is its length.The novel seems to me to be particularly timely in regard to the current philosophical debate in American society at this time. The book revolves around the larger issues of private enterprise and entrepreneurship and socialism and government control. Within the larger theme are many subplots including some romantic intrigue.The first novel by Ayn Rand that I read was "Atlas Shrugged". Since then I have read "Anthem", "The Fountainhead", and a second reading of "Atlas Shrugged". "Anthem" and "Atlas Shrugged" are both dystopian novels. I don't wish to risk spoiling the reading experience for a perspective reader. It is clear to me that Ayn Rand conveys her personal philosophy within these works. In "The Fountainhead" she seems to extol her preferred architecture along with a very strange sexual relationship between two individuals. In "Atlas Shrugged" there is yet more unusual romantic relationships between individuals. Having also read a biography about Ayn Rand it is clear that there is a semi autobiographical aspect to those parts of these novels.In summary I am very glad that I had a chance to read and study both "Atlas Shrugged" and the life and works of Ayn Rand. Her novels provide both entertainment and fuel for thought. I doubt that this book will suit the tastes of all readers, but it is highly readable and was well worth the effort to me. Thank You...

I have quite a few old rugs and know from experience that rug repairs are expensive and of spotty quality. There's nobody in our area of much worth. Therefore I am rewefting and reknotting several areas in a magnificient, extremely old Kazak following the relevant sections of this book. These are areas in which the warp threads still survive but are unsupported by any intact weft and are bare of knots. Thus it's only a matter of time until frank voids develop and the descent into Hell is complete. The book is an absolute bargain and a step-by-step how-to that is clear, concise, well-illustrated, comprehensive, durable, and even lays flat when open for ready reference. Contains a wealth of info on rug structure which you need to understand in order to do proper repairs. There are several very old repairs on the Kazak that are put to shame by the very impressive results that I'm getting even as a first-timer. I may actually rework some of those old areas. I would caution that this is a very exacting and time consuming process. Your fingers might get a little sore. If your patience and frustration tolerance are low, you might not want to tread here. But the book assumes nothing, and the learning curve isn't too steep. An additional big benefit to doing your own work is the ability to promptly take care of small problems before they get to be big ones. The only thing that I might add to the sections on rewefting and reknotting is that I found a curved needle with an eye of sufficient size to accept 2 or 3 ply yarn a life saver.Update: I bought a lot of a broad assortment of colors of Paternayan yarn on the popular auction site, constructed an adjustable frame for repairs, and got an assortment of craft needles at the local fabric store. Along with some supplies (thread scissors, needle-nosed pliers, crochet hook, etc.) already around the house, all in for probably no more than $150 or much less than the cost of a single rug repair. We have about twenty rugs scattered about the house, varying in age (very old to antique) and quality but no dogs. All are in use on the floors. Some had minor issues (knotting, foundation, overcasting, end deterioration issues) that I remedied with the aid of this book. The work is tedious, but the results are astonishing (even my wife is blown away). Found a pair of surgical mosquito forceps to be very useful but not essential. As work proceeds, one begins to appreciate the interdependence of the various structural elements of a rug. Loose or absent knots and overcasting expose the foundation to damage. Broken warps and wefts and end or edge deterioration begin to result in a gradual loosening of adjacent knots and foundation and a needless and heartbreaking descent into ruin. It is gratifying to see these lovely and cherished pieces returned to structural soundness with the investment of time and meticulousness but not much more expense. The vast majority of rugs on that same popular auction site are dogs or worn beyond salvation, but I bought a very unusual and beautiful antique Malayer for cheap. It was very far from worn out but obviously needed some rehab. After some reknotting, minor foundation repair, edge overcasting, flat-woven end restoration, and about 5 weeks of time, the carpet is now totally beautiful and structurally sound. The question is no longer can I do this but rather should I and is the final product worth my time and effort. If you appreciate rugs, this book can enable and embolden you to perform magic.

Excellent book with detailed instructions. I am not a rug repair professional, I just want to do minor repairs on most of my rugs and a major repair on one, if that is possible. This gave me plenty of background and instruction. I also bought a much cheaper book on the same topic and it did not give me, an amateur, enough instruction.l

Don't buy this book and then scoop up all those cheap, beat-up old Caucasians and Persians at yard sales that need a little TLC. I want them.

This is a great book that explains how Persian and Oriental rugs are made and repaired. It is amazing the complexity of quality rug repair and restoration. There are detailed instructions on how to do repairs along with photographs. Recommended by BewyacGroup.com

Must have for the serious collector, even if you are not doing your own repair work---good to have the knowledge. Also a great primer on how rugs are constructed.

CHARLES C.W. COOKE is a writer at National Review and a graduate of the University of Oxford, at which he studied modern history and politics. His work has focused especially on Anglo-American history, British liberty, free speech, the Second Amendment, and American exceptionalism. Charles is the cohost of the Mad Dogs and Englishmen podcast, and has broadcast for HBO (Real Time with Bill Maher), BBC, MSNBC, Fox News, The Blaze, CNBC, CTV, ABC, Sun News, and CBS. As a former republican and somewhere reluctant libertarian, I found this book to be a godsend. It's been difficult to figure out where I fall in the political spectrum and this book fixed me. I think it should be read by anyone unhappy with their party, anyone happy with their party, and anyone that isn't hard headed.

I always listen when Charles C W Cooke speaks on TV. He is erudite, charming and urbane. He is also laser focused and intelligent.I sort of knew my way politically in a fit and start manner and thought I was headed in this direction. It just made sense. The book crystalized things.If you want a good read and feel like neither political party speaks your language...buy the book and open your eyes.

I adopted the label Conservatarian to harmonize viewpoints of mine that are utiliatarian, humanitarian, and vis family loyalty and my love for the Holiday season, my own conservative opinions. This book is how i found that label.Cooke makes mention of Churchill, the civil rights movement, even brings up John Wayne (p. 74). He even makes mention of Walt Disney, Mark Twain, and the Beatles.He quotes writers i've read such as centrist Jonathan Haidt, conservative Michael Medved, FA Hayek, and reformicon Ross Douthat.I recommend this book for persons who have conservative viewpoints who don't want the label for one thing (FA Hayek comes to mind), and don't want the errors of certain movement conservatives ascribed to them for another. I recommend this book for people who have conservative opinions who live and/or work in blue states full of democrats.I recommend this book for libertarians who have conservative, or even progressive viewpoints as well.My opinion: Fusionist Frank Meyer argued that freedom and tradition/order were in 'tension.'Cooke's work, by contrast, shows that freedom, reason, tradition, and order can be harmonized.Buckley the penitent reactionary argued against integration.Cooke's conservatarian philosophy is pro-civil rights, as a bona fide philosophy of constitutionalism should be(see Harry Jaffa).Buckley and Meyer thought they would decide who was conservative and who was not. (They couldn't and had no way to anyway. )Cooke, by contrast, acknowledges that conservatarians do, will, and shall have diversity of opinion. (p.28). i myself am a pro-Israel conservatarian, even if some other person with the label might not be. My own Israel test is a simple and easy one: just don't be anti-Israel.Cooke passes.It's called freedom of thought, contingent only on the no-harm principle.)Cooke recommends being pro-religious freedom, pro-civil liberties, rather than trying to 'stand athwart history and yelling stop.'Cooke proves that a religious person could take a hardline against an anti-hetero pseudo-activistand still respect the constitutional rights of disapproved of 'others' . The label conservatarian is a positive service for cultural conservatives who don't bash gay persons.Cooke, i assert, is correct to say that cultural conservatives should protect religious freedom (peaceful assembly being in that same first amendment), and as the good book notes, 'all these things shall be added unto you.I recommend this book for those who call themselves centrists and/or those who are moderate on social issues.The 'radicalism' you find here is that of straight-forward constitutionalism. And some of the ideas mentioned in this book could help minimize the unwanted hate mongering and fear mongering.So i recommend this book to liberals who have conservative viewpoints.Cooke also mentions what i have said about conservatism and conservatives for years: They need to follow their good ideas, not the failed and bad ones, and that they should start putting the Right set of words on it, in the right way, for the right reason, and in the right measure. ((my husband wrote this review))).

A supremely well-written and highly engrossing discussion with persuasive insights in to how conservative thinking has evolved to its current form, its current opportunities and challenes, and how to best address same. The author is a deeply thoughtful individual with exceptional editorial talent.

Fantastic read. Brilliantly and eloquently makes the case for conservative/libertarian political views. Witty and interesting.

Very solid writing. He doesn't seem to conform fully to one side. He's willing to critique the right side (as well as the left). I had watched him on HBO and heard about this book from that, hithey recommend for all readers, regardless of political view.
